After 25 years of smoking ive decided to quit. Its been almost 4 months since i last smoked and ive decided to get back into moderate shape. Cardio is where im looking to improve when i almost passed out trying to blow a balloon for my daughter. Last thing I want is to short change play time with her because i have the lung capacity of a 102 year old.

So Ive decided my route to fitness was going back to the game of hanball, aka wallball, or 1 wall ball for you non NYCers. Last time I played a serious game was almost 10 years ago so i knew i simply could not step back on the court and play if i was in High school. So i find a court and played with myself knowing id probably embarrass myself if i played an opponent.

Man o man, I knew i was going to be rusty but .......n I'm out of shape! 5 minutes and I was sucking up wind. I packed up and drove home seeing stars and feeling totally defeated and disgusted at myself. The next day i was determined to not give up and try again. I hit the ball around at very slow paced for a good 30 minutes. My legs felt like rubber but i pushed myself till I sweated a little. Felt kind of good pushing myself running, cutting and hitting the ball with a little more force each time.

So my road to recovery is to play at least 2 times a week and maybe look into jogging. hopefully this summer I'll see an improvement.

Anyone else try to get back into shape after years of smoking?

"Round" is a shape, isn't it???

LMAO My husband says the same thing.

I have started walking in the evening. Worked up to a slow jog, and try to play some basketball, which I hate. Getting back in shape is tough. I can go for a walk without getting out of breath now. That is nice.
This is all weather permitting though.

Yes there is hope and there will be improvement. I smoked for 35 years and wanted improvement like I was 16 again. But im in my 50's now... I can say that the rather large pool at my gym is not as long as it was when I first started trying to swim it underwater. Its easy to do the whole length and not be out of breath. I used to be able to only jog about 12 strides on a soccer field now I can jog around it and sprint as well. It just gets easier with time, but never as fast as you would like.. but face it were not kids anymore. My very first post on ECF was that ecigs saved my life.. I still stand by that statement...

Good Luck and keep up the good work!!

ps I forgot to mention I lost 90lbs and got off high blood pressure meds..

I started doing cardio right after I switched to vaping. It was pretty amazing how much easier it was after just a few weeks off of analogs. It's still not as easy as it was when I was young, but that's what you get for being lazy for a decade or so. On the plus side I'm down about 45 pounds and still going strong.

I experienced almost the same symptoms after I quit smoking and decided that I need getting in shape. It took me nearly 2 months to get into at least nominal shape and to be able to run for more than 10 minutes straight without stopping. This was so long ago I almost can't remember the exact details :D , anyway the key is perseverance and to push yourself further and further, eventually you will get into shape !
