The new surgeon general has to use a lot of wiggle words to navigate the politics but what he's tring to say is the most positive thing I've heard from any government official who matters. I think he will be asked a lot of questions so we'll see what comes of that but if he is thoughtful and non political he might be able to calm down the conversation.

His comments are very important in my opinion. So important that the media mostly ignored them, he he.

"However, Murthy expressed worry regarding e-cigarettes because he said there are many unanswered questions about their health impacts, specifically their contents, and if they are ultimately a gateway to traditional smoking." I'm sorry, but anyone who believes that the gateway argument has any kind of validity should turn in their license to practice medicine, let alone be the Surgeon General of the US.

The SF Chronicle article was the same AP article that appeared in the Richmond Times-Dispatch (and many other newspapers).

What recently confirmed SG Murthy was really saying is that he knows nothing about e-cigs, except the deceitful talking points that Obama's DHHS.has been claiming since 2009.

During the past several decades, the SG office has provided very little, if any, public health leadership, especially on the issue of smoking and tobacco.

Rather, the FDA, CDC and DHHS Secretary have led the charge to promote and implement federal health policies, especially on smoking, tobacco and e-cigs (including lobbying for the FSPTCA, banning e-cigs, demonizing e-cigs, and proposing the deeming regulation to ban >99% of e-cigs).

The SG has become a political doormat for Presidents who use the office to claim they support "affirmative action" (as most SG appointees have been racial minorities), and the SG's office has been little more than a lame rubber stamp cheerleader for DHHS policy. Even the first lady has become more prominent than the SG in providing public health leadership as Michelle Obama led the campaign for youth fitness and nutrition, while Obama's first SG appointee was obese.

I'd bet that 90% of Americans couldn't even name any of the many SGs since C Everett Koop in the 1980s (and I'd bet that 90% of MDs in America couldn't name more than one SG since Koop).

It's a general situation where various bureaucrats (of the MBA type) are overriding doctors, engineers, etc. Think Challenger shuttle.

Since only 27% of American citizens can name both of their U.S. senators, and only 66-69% even knows who their governor is or who is vice president of the US........not sure not knowing who the SG is can be considered an important stat. :)

This is despite the fact that since '89 that news coverage has increased and so have the ways in which it is delivered.

We also seem to expect this same populace to "understand and support vaping" ---- in general. Vaping is practiced by less than 20% of the population to begin with.

It's gonna take a while.........
