Are our coils clogging because of flavor, VG% or ???

    Greetings,

while I've known some store bought juice to clog up one of my Aspire coils in a matter of a few days, now that I'm mixing my own juice and before I get into heavy or almost 100% VG mixes I'm wondering what the real issue is or if it is a combination of issues?

I've heard that the Aspire Nautilus tanks because of design they in general don't flow high VG% juices very well. Yesterday I made up a Nautilus and K1 tanks of almost pure VG% and after priming them (and waiting 10-15min) they seemed to vape as well as my PG/VG 50/50% juice (a bit sweeter and more 'cloud'). Since I just mixed up these tanks yesterday I have no idea if I've just mixed a pre-mature failure for both tank coils or not.

So if the heavy VG% is NOT to blame is it the flavoring? I've heard that darker juice (the one that clogs my coils is a very dark 'coffee' flavor) flavors are more bound to do it as well as very sweet flavors.

As a benchmark, I soak/clean my coils after every tank full and generally get a few weeks to a month use out of them before tossing in the trash. The 'coil clogging juice' would render a coil fairly useless in just a few days. I rotate 1/2 dozen or more Aspire Nautilus, K1 and Maxi tanks with different flavors.

What has your experience been? Was it something about the: color, flavor or PG/VG% (or all three) that you've found kills your coils faster than other juice?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

It's definitely the over flavoring of the juice and yes you're right dark juices will trash a pack of coils heads faster than you can order new coils online.
Generally unflavored juice doesn't do this and barely leaves any build up behind, but you would have to be using some pretty low grade vg or pg for it to do what you've explained above. Also, are you using extracts or concentrates to flavor your juice? Extracts can usually damage coils a bit faster because of the amount of natural oils in them, oil based flavorings are notorious for this too.

I use a few drops or < 5% per tank of all natural flavoring and have not gunked up my coils on my on mixes but was hoping to avoid that as I venture into high or 100% VG base mixes.

As mentioned, I have at least one store bought juice which will trash a coil in just a few days of intermittent usage. (I've learned to dilute it up to 70% with unflavored base to save the coils and still be able to use up the juice.)

Hence the question: if the bases (VG or PG) are not clogging up our coils, what exactly is?

i have never had max vg juices clog my coils any worse than 50/50, my guess is it's probably the flavoring you're using. You may want to try a different brand.

I've never had any of my own juices clog up my coils ether.

So if it is the flavorings, what flavorings in your experience should someone avoid?

Like i said in the earlier post, stay away from oil based flavorings and homemade vg extracts unless you want to spend a fortune in replacement coils or go to rebuilding.
Other than that, its a hit or miss game.
I've currently switched to using only TFA flavorings because they taste the closest to the real thing to me rather than candy. Most all of them are clear or lightly colored and i have yet to find one that's a coil killer.

I don't mention it much because I really don't want to hassle with the possible responses, but in my mind it HAS to be the thick syrupy flavorings exclusivily. I say this because 15 years ago I caught a virus that destroyed mu sense of smell and taste completely ... Even analogs had absolutely zero flavor, I was just addicted to the nicotine . So vaping for me is zero flavorings of any kind. I use 100% VG with straight liquid nicotine at about 36 ml to a liter of vg ... I have never needed to change a coil in the 7 full months of vaping. They stay translucent, where they pass through the exact center of the coil they hardly get dark let alone burnt or clogged. I always smile when a clearo or igniter review post states the 1 month or a bit more that the coil lasts because I'm a constant heavy vaper person ... I get less than 4 hours from any 18650 battery and I only get 5 hours from my God 180 s ... even so, I have yet to ever even see a clogged coil or brown wick from my newbie 2200 mah pen styles with the beginners 1.5 vertical bottom coil, nor from disassembling a Gimlet Giant just to inspect for clogging or darkening, and I'm sure I'm going to see the same results from my 2 new boxs, the VTR and 180S coils.

Thank you so much for responding!

So from what your saying is my coils ought to last a long time if I stick with flavorless juice.

While I'm still de-toxing off of a 44yr smoking habit I'm experimenting with different PG/VG ratios and adjusting 'throat hit', nicotine mg and flavor. Personally I'm always 'direct to lung' so any "throat hit" I actually consider a negative.

The only new thing I have ordered lately is what some vaping sites sell ... "Bitter Wizard" ... no flavor of its own but used to cut the cloying sweetness of inhaling straight VG at sub ohm levels ... still waiting for it to arrive but some posted reviews say it can cut the sweetness to near zero if one wants that ...
