There is a small learning curve with using cartotanks. To me, it boils down to having some basic knowledge of how a punched cartomizer and tank work together, knowing the proper technique of prepping the cartomizer (which is the same as filling a carto for solo use), and knowing the proper technique of assembling/filling the tank itself. There are many videos available on YouTube demonstrating how to properly fill a cartomizer and how to fill a cartotank.
Dry hits or flooding are generally symptoms that are user-error related and generally can be corrected. Using these simple devices is not rocket science. Having said that, most of us who use cartotanks have had our ups and downs during the learning process, but with experience behind us we have learned what works best for us.
For instance, I generally advise new tank users to buy pre-punched cartomizers from their vendor. Doing this removes a large part of the learning process that can lead to user error. It might not seem so difficult to put a hole into a carto, yet I've found that this is likely one of the major issues that can determine success or failure in using a cartotank. Using pre-punched cartos just eliminates one of the factors that can go wrong. Once one has gotten the other parts down with tanking, they can determine whether to learn how to punch their own or continue buying the cartos with holes made by the manufacturer.
And to comment on the OP's inquiry if cartotanks offer the best flavor production, I'd have to say a qualified yes, they do. I've been using cartomizer tanks for a few months. 99% of my vaping is done with multiple cartotanks, each with their own flavor, totalling somewhere around 20 tanks in all. I've tried the vivi nova style tanks and like the easy fill tops and the vapor they offer, but their flavor production leaves much to be desired when the same juice is compared in a cartotank side-by-side.
Take a look at the below video by PBusardo reviewing a highly recommended tank tool. You will see how he assembles and fills a tank using a pre-filled cartomizer and the tank tool. It's actually quite simple.
