Like surfmonkey, the term Nerd was definitely used as a weapon. Over the course of the years, the geek term has evolved to being a nerd with social skills (to me). In school, definitely a nerd and in College that started to change (the copious amounts of beverages didn't hurt either), and I proudly identify with geek now maybe as an homage to my former nerd self.
My wife however is cannot identify with either and over the years I am starting to make her understand and convert her (she'll actually turn on an episode of TNG and watch it without me). She is still struggling with the new gadgetitis that I get on any announcement of something new but is slowly starting to understand the pure giddyness
I think I am. I am artistic and making a living from it. I drool over the newest cool, shiny gadget. I am also pretty good at socializing though, which made me more popular then some of my good friends. I am also very old fashion. I think I am a geek with nerdy tendencies built from my D&D days, love of all that is fantasy and Scifi that has upgraded with the times as I have gotten older.
edited: Way too much info about myself after reading it again...
the title of this thread is somewhat misleading... I say this because, being a 'nerd' today is nothing like what being a nerd was 15-20 years ago. As stated above already, being a nerd was never a positive thing; and was more or less a social flag that most people who were given it wish they never had ><
