Hi everybody! (Hi, Dr. Nick)

I'm new here and wanted to share what I have learned so far through trial and error.

Have tried several clearos:

  • Stardust V3 (x2): dual coil so nice warm vapor, top coil has problems wicking thicker juices, leaky.
  • Kanger EVOD BCC (x2): bottom coil wicks thick juice better, single coil produces less vapor, gurgles a lot.
  • Aspire BDC CE5 (x2): bottom dual coil, warm vapor, no problems wicking, no leaks, no gurgles.

The Aspire BDC system seems to be ideal for me, but I ran into trouble with menthol juices. I loaded up some Johnson Creek Tundra and it was great at first, loads of menthol, loads of vapor. However, when I started vaping it again an hour or so later it had a funny taste, and by the afternoon it was awful: a kind of rancid plastic taste.

I suspected that this might be because of the plastic tank, so I ordered a couple of ET-S clearos (pyrex version, be careful when ordering as there is a plastic version too and not all sellers are clear about which they are selling).

I loaded up the Tundra and again it was great - at first. After a while that horrible plastic taste came back… I can only imagine that this taste is due to an incompatibility between the menthol juice and the (rubber? silicon?) seals around the head. Other, non-menthol, juices don't give me this problem.

So there you go. Things I have learnt:

  • Best clearo I have found is the Aspire ET-S Pyrex.
  • Don't use very strong menthol juices in Aspire BDC heads.

Hope this helps…

Hi!

Search the site for "Aspire BDC" - the reviews are very mixed so far. I seem to recall a very similar problem to what you are describing: worked fine, let it sit overnight, tasted terrible the next day. It seems to come down to - some coils are really good, some coils are just messed up. I doubt the menthol has much to do with it.

The EVOD's can be tweaked. But we need to know more about what battery or APV you are using and what resistance coils.

I have an Aspire BDC on an ego-c. No real complaints. good steady vapor. flavor drops off on the tail end of a prolonged draw, but nicotine levels prevent me from taking too much at one time anyway. coils gunk up after just about a week-and-a-half on the first head. dry burned and flushed it until replacements came in. just waiting on wire now to see if i can rebuild.

I'm realizing this is probably not the most pro setup, but it's sufficient.

Apart from the menthol problem, the Aspire BDC heads seem great. I like high VG juices (minimum 50/50, PG gives me a sore throat) and these heads seem to work well with them.

I'm not sure how they work because there doesn't seem to be a traditional wick, but they're the best of the ones I've tested for now.

Oh the wick is in there. It's really not much different in design than a Kanger wick & coil, but now all enclosed in that metal casing. Why that is supposed to help? No idea. It obviously makes cleaning and maintenance a lot harder. It takes a certain amount of effort - and a couple pair of pliers - to remove the metal cap. But it's doable.

I just tore one appart, its 2 wicks in an x pattern like the top coil ones (iclear 16 for example) and a ring of absorbent material. I mention the style of dual wicks mostly because smoktech makes a dual coil single wick type. They come apart fairly easily bit rebuilding them may be more hassle than its worth. I will say tho at least that the wicking material used is pretty low grade on the aspire brand coils, as i have gently dry burned 2 of them. While 1 survived and seems to be working fine, the other one burnt to a crisp almost immediately. Vision has a line of similar coils, however, based on expense i havent tried them yet to see if theres any improvement. I will say tho that i get good warm flavorful vape from the Aspire ET-S when it has a good coil in it, and rarely a funny taste. My thought on that is that perhaps the sealing ring could be coming into contact with the coil in some cases. For reference, using MBV vapes at 65/35 mix, iTaste SVD @ 3.8v, Aspire ET-S w/ 1.8 coil. Forgot to add, the coil unit itsself simply pulls apart.
