- Many of the Chinese manufacturers already have RoHS and CE compliance certificates for the hardware.

- At least a couple of the UK retailers have had their liquid tested by a leading UK laboratory (plus one is manufacturing liquid in the UK)

- Liquid is being sold with warning labels and in child-proof containers

- Steps are being implemented to ensure the sale is to over 18s only, and that the product is only for smokers

To my way of thinking, they are eliminating the arguments that anyone has against these things before an argument even occurs. That doesn't mean that there won't be a battle in the future, but it does mean that they are starting from a much stronger position.

yeah good points. Sometimes being 12 or more months behind the USA on technology is a good thing. We learn from thier mistakes and act upon them before they get us.

Yes, I agree - these are all steps to consolidate a respectable legal product, and if more research can be done on the medical front, it should make the position even stronger.

You are spot on there, entrenching themselves within existing legislation and ensuring compliance makes for a very strong defence. There is a good deal of support from within the medical profession and indeed a lot of people working for the NHS are using ecigs as a healthier alternative and one that doesn't cause them to stink of tobacco when dealing with their patients. We allow the political pimps their peccadillos and in return we expect some leeway when it comes to making life choices. Apart from which, we know where they live!!:sneaky:

(snip)

It's that support which is crucial, I think. I hope we have enough time to mobilise it.

katink's right the way its carrying on ..its only a matter of time for the UK to get the same treatment.

Hope we have enough time then to really get some solid support from GP's and researchers.

As one who accidentally quit analog cigarettes, I feel one of the most compelling values of the e-cig is actually related to cessation. I hope we are not forbidden to say so by some political linguistic powerplays.

Best,

It would be great if you Brits would VETO it because that way all of europe would be 'free' (well, all countries would then have to do something themselves).
But if you do as usual, and just let europe go ahead but make an exception for yourself... then whole of europe will be stuck with a central decision still. So I hope you are right in that you lot cán do something; but it must be a veto, not an 'exception for Brits', okay? :D

Katink, in what office in Brussels or Strasbourg do the EU Medicocrats hang out??

C.
Lol they are still 'our traveling mega-government' - traveling back and forth between the two places. But I think most of the important stuff happens in Brussels
I don't expect that european parliament will even be consulted on our fate... probably clerks and aids of the ministers-club make the rules, health-ministers will decide to agree on them or not over a cup of caffeine most probably, and that'll be about it - another instance of european democracy at it's finest - so you will need to 'instruct' your minister and his clerks beforehand else you may be too late.

I think the UK will get it on a local level before we get it country wide, the local licensing authority here think they are god and have banned all vaping/e-cigs in pubs in this area, I will challenge the decision though and hopefully others will too.
I heard someone else mention this elsewhere and so made enquiries of our local licensing officer (a friend of ours). They do NOT have any right whatsoever to do this themselves, so if it was indeed the licensing officer, then please do challenge it! However, it could be that there has been a 'local' decision passed by the Council, which they have asked the licensing officer to implement on their behalf. Still, it is certainly worth making enquiries to get to the bottom of it.... good luck and let us know how you get on.

On another note, my sister mentioned the e-cig over the phone to the person running her local cessation clinic, and from what my sister told me, it sounds like the woman practically turned into a screaming banshee on the end of the phone! "OMG Don't touch those! They're not safe! They're not licenced! They're dangerous!".... then proceeded to try and push her on to Champix which is "this wonderful new drug with absolutely no side effects whatsoever" (and my sister is on a LOT of medication for various things and has to be careful what she takes: she isn't even allowed the patches or the gum!)

Wonderful, eh?
