At what point is vapor smoke?

I am curious - atomizers can get pretty hot - and there is some particle matter in e-liquids...dry burning generates what appears to be smoke and not vapor - with all the LR atties and higher voltage mods, cart filler gets burned, plastic tips melt, there is a burnt taste when time to refill even when dripping - so, at what point are we really just smoking and no longer "vaping"?

You would need to know what the burning temperature is for all the different materials & parts that make up the electronic cigarette to get your answers.
And, the temperatures which atomizers can attain. Seems logical to assume a dry atty would get hotter than a wet one ... to the point that it will burn out if fired too long when dry. But, what are those respective temperatures? I don't know.

I don't think this is a general problem.

Sure atties can get hot (red hot) when you dry burn them, but mostly when you're vaping, you'll never get it hot enough to burn. Sure people are starting to push the voltage envelope. I think the general range is 3.3 -> 7.1v, there are a few 8v+ mods out there, but I really think this is overkill.

Most good high voltage mods have resistance detection in them, and won't fire on high voltage settings if the resistance of the atty is too low. This prevents the atty from burning out, but indirectly also prevents you inhaling smoke (if there was any).
