Atomizers, essentially, are the engines of vaping with no fuel tank attached; they are fed either by a cartridge (a foam-filled container which holds juice and delivers it to the atomizer coil by capillary action) or by direct dripping, in which juice is dropped by the user directly into the atomizer.

Cartomizers are really atomizers with an integral chamber packed with filler material, which delivers juice to the coil in much the same manner as cartridges.

As a general rule, atomizers fed by direct dripping produce the best, most saturated flavor, but you have re-drip after a few draws; cartomizers last considerably longer without refueling, but flavor is compromised in order to gain convenience.

Cartridges, IMHO, are the least-desirable option.

The atomizer has a mesh bridge above it's coil and ceramic pot. The idea is that your polyfill lined cartridge would be filled with e-liquid and then put into the atomizer. The liquid soaked polyfill is supposed to sit on the mesh bridge and alow the liquid to be wicked into the coil and vaporized. Well, that rarely works out, so most folks direct drip the liquid right onto the bridge, or even remove the bridge and diret drip onto the coil.

The cartomizer has a coil (or coils) surrounded by wicking material and is the cartridge and atomizer all in one, vs being two pieces (atomizer plus cartridge).

Hope that helps. :D

battery + atomizer (all metal) + cartridge aka cart (just plastic and stuffing)
Cart can reused, restuffed etc. Atomizer can degrade or suddenly die, last flavor hangs around the atomizer. Cart may need frequent topping off with liquid and can sometimes dump 1/2 its juice in your mouth. Can use any PG/VG as long as it flows at least as fast as you vape it

battery + cartomizer
Cartomizer is an expendable item which many can get 7+ days use out of. Every carto is like having a brand new atomizer. Your flavors in cartomizers are totally separate from each other. More enclosed, won't dump 1/2 its juice. Need to be kept damp or they can singe and ruin the flavor. They cannot be restuffed. A typical carto holds twice as much as a typical cart. Most cartos work best with thin juices (I use PG w/ 20% or less VG)

I use atomizer and drip tip on a sealed manual battery to test new juices and vape some thick or rarely used juices. I use cartomizers for my everyday vaping which is about 98% of my vaping.
