Never Cross-Thread Your mod or Atty Again!!!
Place (just) the tip of the faster into the hole and turn it counterclockwise (assuming conventional thread. If you're using left hand threaded fasteners, you probably already know this). When the threads end, you'll feel the drop and can reverse to clockwise, confident that you're lined up.
