items ft list as authentic are authentic
BUT that includes factory seconds, so i'd avoid batteries
That's a great point. I have purchased drop in coils from Fast Tech and they have been verified as authentic. But something as important as batteries, I would not purchase from Fast Tech, Ebay, or Amazon. For me, my batteries are the most important piece of my setup. Mooch's bench tests have proven repeatedly that counterfeit and rewrap batteries may have only half the amp rating or mAh rating of the authentic batteries he has tested.

The reason we have a recommended list of reputable and trusted battery suppliers is because there are so many shiesters selling inferior batteries worldwide. The trusted vendors are middleman suppliers who take great care in deciding where they get their batteries. Many of them test a new batch themselves to insure quality control, while others have Mooch test samples out for quality control and authenticity. I kind of doubt that the vendors at Fast Tech, Ebay, Amazon, or vape shops do any random testing for quality. Even the below trusted vendors will occassionally get a bad batch of batteries in ... sometimes it can't be helped. But they will do the right thing and replace or refund for any customer who receives a counterfeit battery.

What exactly is a factory second?
Batteries made by Lg, Samsung, Sanyo, and Sony are manufactured to be used exclusively in battery packs for the auto and portable power tool industries.

Batteries are not "created equal" despite high standards of engineering, technology, and manufacturing techniques. After the cells are made and prior to being sold, they go through a series of quality control processes. They then are sorted as to their overall quality. Batteries are then graded A, B or C in quality.

Batteries that test with an efficiency of 95.5%+ are considered A Bin
Batteries that test with an efficiency of 92%-95%+ are considered B Bin
Batteries that test with an efficiency of 88%-91%+ are considered C Bin

“A Bin” batteries represent the top tier, and are generally reserved for sale for the auto and OEM power tool industries. “B” and “C” Bin batteries, or "factory seconds" are somewhat lesser in quality, and are generally sold off to those brands or companies who re-wrap batteries under their own logo or brand.

The top tier batteries are often made available to resellers and suppliers when they become overstocked. Rebranding/re-wrapping companies also purchase these A bin batteries (along with lesser quality batteries) and market them with exaggerated specifications. Are You Using a Rewrap (Rebranded or Aftermarket) Battery?

Another vendor that you seem to forget to include on that list that is on mooch's list is 18650batterystore.com. They have better prices than most of the others, and process orders very quickly. I pretty much only use them any more and never had an issue.

The batteries I buy locally are most probably bought from Fasttech anyway...;)
You make that assumption based on what? Have you asked the vendors where you buy locally where they source their batteries? If they tell you they buy directly from Lg, Samsung, or Sony they are lying because that's not the way the battery market works. All the batteries available to us regular consumers come from middleman distributors and suppliers. Those are the people who determine the quality of batteries sold to the general public. Where is the check point that determines that the battery is not a counterfeit? That's the difference between a reputable trusted supplier or not.

In the end there is no such checkpoint.
Even with those "trusted vendors" there is no 100% guarantee that the items you buy are genuine.
Of course nothing is 100%. There are only two 100% truths in life: Paying taxes and eventually dying from something.

The thing with buying from "trusted vendors" is that they are continuously monitoring their suppliers for quality and authenticity. Every one of them will occassionally get a bad batch of batteries. Most of them do some sort of quality control testing on site, others will pay someone like Battery Mooch to test samples for quality and authenticity.

What sets them apart from other vendors is should they sell a counterfeit or poor quality battery to a customer, they will do the "right thing" by offering a replacement or refund if it has been proven the battery is a counterfeit or an authentic that came from a bad batch. Not all vendors will do that. You're stuck with a bad battery and ...... that you wasted your money. :-x

This is the key for me. I know there's no 100% assurance that batteries will be authentic, but the testing does reduce the risk that I'll be sticking a counterfeit battery in my mod. Everything to do with batteries seems to work along those lines; it's risk reduction, not elimination.

All batteries I've got from FastTech have been genuine and for the few I've made some tests all of them performed as they should. My last shipment was a 6-pack of ICR18650-30B Sammies, super consistent result after controlled in series discharge final cell voltage measurement and flat out balanced 3S2P team after 1+6, 2+5 and 3+4 pairing. Upon pack assembly and calibration the laptop's software reported well above stock energy output record (stock cells: 4.3V 2800mAh LG ICR18650 C2).
I specifically requested FastTech's staff to make sure of the authenticity of the cells. Incorrect voltage rating cells die very soon (fakes even instantly) when charged at 4.3+V.

Cheers :)
