Me too. All the interviews, behind the scenes looks and trailers I've seen lead me to believe it will live up to its hype.

Unlike District 9.
I saw Peter Jacksons name on it, and that was good enough for me. Didn't realize he produced it, not directed. I go a little deeper now before I jump the gun. That's all I'll say about that.

you mean district 9????
I loved that movie

Oops! Fixed it, thanks

Not so much, just wasn't my cup of tea. I liked the technical merits, but the camera shooting style gave me a headache.
The plot: Did you ever read a story in english, and after it was done, the teacher told you the whole story was a metaphor for another type of uneasy situation. The metaporical story I got from this movie is what I dislike the most. The story was so abhorently strong to me, that I could not escape into it, to enjoy it for what it was.
That's just my take.

I'm actually in the minority here, apparently, but I'm just getting a bad vibe about Avatar and not excited about it in the least, and I'm a sci-fi nut.

*LOVED* District 9, btw, and I actually really love most of James Cameron's work, but I haven't liked most of the visuals I've seen from Avatar so far (way too CGI-ey for my tastes), and more than that, I just have this terrible feeling the story's not going to be there in the end (which is the most important part of any sci-fi for me).

I even listened to the new "I See You" Leona Lewis song specifically for the movie and it just has me feeling they're trying to copy the Titanic song as closely as possible without actually using the same song (and I liked Titanic - don't get me wrong, but the similiar "sound" is just too eery for me).

We shall see - I'd love to be wrong and like this movie, but my instincts keep telling me to run.

Not excited about avatar at all. The 3D thing is a gimmick and any movie that relies on a gimmick is suspect in my eyes. Also, the plot seems to be utterly stupid. Humans and their technology are evil, the noble savages are the good guys. Human falls in love with savage, bullxxxx ensues.

James Cameron about the movie:

"the Na'vi represent something that is our higher selves, or our aspirational selves, what we would like to think we are," and "the humans in the film, even though there are some good ones salted in, represent what we know to be the parts of ourselves that are trashing our world and maybe condemning ourselves to a grim future."

Oh please James, tell me more about the evil of our ways, I really need you to educate me. Pffff....

Just FYI, the first couple reviews are out and overwhelmingly positive (The Trades Have Their Reviews Up For James Cameron?s AVATAR!! -- Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. - no spoilers; just brief blurbs), so I may eat my hat on my previous comments. [Though I don't always agree with reviews, positive or negative.]

I *still* wonder about the plot. The trailers make it seem really shallow to me and simple, but maybe that's just the trailers and it's much more than I imagine. (Story always trumps effects for me, so that's the bit that will make or break it for me.)
