I recently purchased my first VV MOD (Saber Touch). It states to use a (2) 3.7v 16340 batteries. It's recommended to use protected batteries and ever since that thing in Florida with the MOD exploding on that man, I wanted to make sure I get the correct batteries. Some people on here have suggested the AW IMR batteries and I have 4 brand new ones in my possession. But then I was told that these are "Not-Protected" batteries. So can someone please let me know what the difference is in the AW vs the AW IMR batteries? Also, if I want to have true, safe, protected batteries....which ones should I get? These will be stacked and I want to make sure I am safe. I also would like to know what mAh would be good to get! Thanks for all your help!!

All AW batteries are considered suitable for use in mods. The AW 'red' batteries are Li-Mn cells, which are a safer chemistry type that don't need the protection circuits that Li-ion cells do; and the AW 'black' cells are protected Li-ion's. So any AW cell is fine. They also make Li-FePo4 cells which are suitable.

Make sure that the total battery voltage is suitable for your mod as recommended by the manufacturer.

Your mod needs to have some safety features especially if you are putting two batteries in it. These should include some kind of a fuse, and gas vents. ECF does not advise using a 2-battery metal tube mod without both electrical and physical safety features.

As metal tube mods with two batteries are the only type implicated in gas venting incidents, it makes sense to be very careful indeed when using this type of mod. If you are in any doubt then the safe answer is don't do it.

Thanks for your reply!! I currently have the AW IMR's and they are 550mAh each. The Saber Touch has protected wiring and has 2 vent holes. It also is equipped with a collapsable spring in case of any problems, the spring would collapse and not continue to circuit the battery.

So with all that being said...It the AW IMR 3.7V 550mAh batteries that I have sufficient?

AW cells are suitable provided they have a sufficient C rating for the job they will be doing. So if those cells are advertised as having a 5C rating, or a maximum discharge capacity of 2,500mA or more (about the same thing as a 5C rating, for this cell), then they are suitable. If the rating is lower then they are not suitable. You may have to email the distributor to find that out.
