14500 are AA size but protected ones will usually be 1-2mm longer due to the PCB. I haven't used an off the shelf AA holder that will take a protected cell without PITA modding.

You could get a seperate protection PCB and use an unprotected cell. You can also be sure to have full, consistant protection on which ever batteries you choose as a lot of protected cells are less protected than others.

Of course, 3XAAA is also going smaller and you'll likely get better mah.

oh lol haha well i think i may just go protected :) the little modifications to the positive terminal wont be well... terminal haha thanks bro :D

I've used protected Ultrafire 14500's in 2XAA boxes. All you've got to do is just put a bit of solder on the positive terminal so it makes contact with the protected 14500 top button terminal. I usually just melt a bit of solder on the tip of the soldering iron then touch it to the face of the battery box positive terminal until it gets up to temp and the solder wicks onto the face of the positive terminal. I've done that to 4 or 5 boxes, and works like a charm every time. So far after removing the battery every day for 3 or 4 weeks the positive terminal continues to make a good connection to the protected battery.
