most of the guys on the chat section say that i should still use protected batts on the vamo... just as a procaution.

last thing i would want is for it to blow in my hand or worse.. while im using is.

thoughts on hybrid batts?
Panasonic NCR18650PF batteries come to mind. supposedly hi drain but with a difference chemistry to it

Protected batteries don't get along well with the Vamo's built-in protection circuitry. High drain IMR or hybrid chemistry are what you want.

The PF's are good. So are the CGH/CR cells at RTD.

They're high drain, have discharge capacity of 10a and have a chemistry that dies gracefully if anything goes wrong.

but whats the deal with these being called hybrids? LOL (asked this on the batt section as well)

safer chem + protection?

FT says that they are unprotected tho

There are so many posts on this forum mixing words protected, and safe chemistry.

Protected battery has nothing to do with safe chemistry.
When you see Protected 18650 that means that chemistry is not safe, and electronic protection is welded to the bottom of that battery.
These batteries are longer, and will not fit in 80% of mods.

Hybrid is a new word, and it comes with introduction of new chemical compounds used in the latest generation of li-ion batteries.

Batt. developers are trying to increase capacity, and not to skip on safety.

Because of that batt. manufacturers are using more than 3-4 chemical substances that we cannot call IMR, ICR, IFR anymore.

In simple words Hybrid is safer battery with "Jambalaya" chemistry ;)

I use word safer because there is no li-ion battery that can be called safe in existence today.

Strontium is right. Battery R&D is being driven by the race to develop the perfect hybrid/electric vehicle.

Also right about there being no such animal as a "safe" Lithium Ion battery. There is only "safer" chemistry being developed, and it's going one snail's pace at a time.

As a user of Li-Ion batteries in surveying, GPS and radio equipment, I'm intrigued. Some of the stuff we were using in the mid to late 1990's would scare the pants off of me, if I knew then what I know today.

Are we talking about LiPo made in Chinese state of the art basement lab :) ?
