I have this charger and these batteries,

Now for my slightly dumb question
I remember growing up my father telling it was far better to charge a car battery with a trickle charge slowly over a longer period of time than to rapid charge it for a short time. Now I don't know if this is true of car batteries or any other batteries, let alone these LI-ION batteries.
Does it make any difference if I charge my batteries at the .5 amps or 1.0 amps. According to the limited information that came with it, the 18650 battery can be charged at either, but is capible of being charged at 1.0 where some of the others need the lower setting.
