Battery charging. Can it be overdone?

Hello again! My batt has an auto cutoff on the charger that prevents overcharging, that's not the question. The question is; is it bad to charge your batt all the time? I don't wait for it to completely die (never has completely died, actually) I just plug it in when I get low on fluid or after vaping for a few hours. It never takes more than 30-45 minutes to charge completely even though the manual says "the battery will take around 4-5 hours to completely charge". Am I hurting my battery by doing this? Thanks!

Lithium ion batteries usually say something like good for 300 cycles. That means that it is good for 300 cycles from empty to full. If you charge it when it is half full you can charge it 600 times. Also if you always charge it half way and then on the 245th recharge run it all the way down it will go all the way down. It will not "remember" that it usually gets charged half way down. There is a point, I think it is under 3 volts, where you will start to hurt the battery and it will not last for it's 300 cycles. If you baby it, charge early, it will last longer than 300 cycles.

You can overcharge a battery but not in the way you are asking. If you have a really cheap charger that does not stop charging when your batt reaches 4.2 volts... You will end up with an over charged battery... And this means trouble (fire hazard trouble). If ever your MOD or volt meter etc... shows that your battery is above 4.2 volts when fully charge, you have a bad charger and should discard it right away along with the over-charged batteries.

Other than that, you can charge your battery when ever you want... li-ion cells don't suffer from what is known as battery memory, so you don't have to worry about it. Note that this is only true for your vaping li-ion battery! Other nickle based batteries (like in a DeWalt Drill) DO suffer from battery memory... So keep that in mind.

I have heard that when the efest chargers v2 or v4 charges the battery to full that it stops charging the battery so u can just leave it in. Can antone confirm this?

Yes, most "intelligent" chargers will stop when the battery is "full" (4.2 volts)

It is always a good idea to keep an eye on the voltage of your battery when it is fresh out of the charger... see my comment above.

Great thread.. I was wondering the same thing. Since I started vaping I have only once completely drained a battery. Im not a very heavy user (1 to 1 1/2 ml a day) so every morning I attach a fresh battery and charge the previous days battery. I try to evenly rotate them.

You have great intuition. Rotating your batteries evenly is the way to go.

Most mods (except mechanicals) will shut down when the battery reaches 3.2 ~ 3.1 volts.

Li-ion batteries, like the ones we use to vape cannot be discharge to 0 volts... If that happens the battery is destroyed and will become dangerous if you try to charge them.... This is called over-discharging.

The battery we use should never be discharge under 2.9ish volts... actually if you notice your battery under 3 volts that should be a red flag to you, you are doing something wrong.

In a nutshell.... Keep an eye on these to factors:

1 - Over 4.2 volts = you over-charged the battery and that is dangerous
2 - Under 3 volts = you over-discharged the battery and that can be even more dangerous.

When you buy batteries look at the tech sheet... This info is usually disclosed.

I just learned something new

One of my batteries top out at 3.9. Is that bad?

I wouldn't use that battery any more, that is a sign of battery fatigue... A freshly charged battery should show exactly 4.2 volts.

I highly recommend that you get rid of it.

What kind of setup are you running?

And what kind of battery is it?
