[FONT=arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif]I recently purchased an innokin SVD from FT with some Panasonic Protected NCR18650A Rechargeable 3100mAh 3.7V 18650 Lithium batteries ,[/FONT]
[FONT=arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif]someone told me that PROTECTED bats wont work in the SVD because it has built in protection ?[/FONT]

[FONT=arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif]Can anyone clarify please , hope i haven't wasted money on these batteries for nothing

  • The SVD is a regulated mod, meaning it uses a microprocessor utilizing boost circuitry which requiries high drain IMR batteries. IMRs are superior to protected li-ion when maximum load current is required, such as with regulated mods, or mechanical mods using a Kick, or using an RBA.
  • Your Panasonic protected NCR18650A 3100mAh batteries may or may not "work" in your SVD. At the least, they aren't the "ideal" battery of choice. There are some built-in protective circuitry in regulated mods which may detect the protected circuit of a Li Ion battery as a short and refuse to fire. And many protected Li Ion batteries do not have the high drain ability nor the maximum load current for regulated mods, or for a Kick module, like high drain IMR's do.
  • Batteries can be extremely confusing to tell one from the other, and difficult to know which are best to be used in our mods. There are a few different battery chemistries, and some of the manufacturers are very tight-lipped (Panasonic in particular) of their batteries' chemistry. This doesn't help to determine which batteries best suit our applications for mods.
  • I've spent quite a bit of time in the last month trying to decipher the different chemistry, manufacturer labeling, battery specifications, and learning battery expert's recommendations for batteries used for mods. Much of this information can be found in this guide:

  • I found out that un-protected Li Ion batteries should NEVER be used in a mod, and that IMR batteries (Li Mn) are now recommended over protected Li Ion batteries for all applications for all mods. Not all batteries nor all IMRs are created equal. Below are the 18650 IMR batteries that can be recommended for nearly all mods and nearly all applications:

AW IMR
18650 2000mah
18650 1600mah

Panasonic ​or Orbtronic hybrid
CGR18650CH (IMR/Li Ion hybrid) 2250mAh
NCR18650PD (high drain-high capacity) 2900mAh

Samsung hybrid (LiNiCoMnP)

* Use of sub-ohm coils < 0.5 ohm in RBAs require special IMR batteries with higher amperage in continuous discharge rates, which include the AW 1600 mAh, the Samsung 2000 mAh, and the MNKE 1500 mAh.

** Trustfire, Ultrafire, and Surefire batteries are name-brand batteries of a second tier of quality and safety, and not as recommended as the batteries in the above list.

*** Generic unbranded batteries are unknown quality batteries from an unknown source, most likely rejects from better manufacturers and rewrapped by lesser quality manufacturers. These batteries are not recommended. These are often included in starter kits from China, and may not even be the right type of battery for those mods. Do not assume they are safe or the correct type.

**** NEVER use an UN-PROTECTED LI ION battery in your mod. These have been listed for sale at FastTech, Amazon, and Ebay. Know what battery you are looking at before purchasing it.
