Battery question

Hello,

Regarding the use of unprotected Li-Ion batteries in a device such as the lavatube, what are the risks? I know they can fail catastrophically, but shouldn't the lavatube's circuitry negate most of the risk? The reason I ask is I have some of these, https://www.fasttech.com/products/1420/10001980/1141102 , I did not get them from fasttech but I am 100% sure they are genuine panasonic batteries.

This blog is everything battery and has a comprehensive list of good batteries. If this were a hybrid you would be set. (the 18650PF or 18650PD with green wrappers)

From what I could remember the gray ones have a low amp rating. I google-fu'd (sorry I accidentally posted just the blog link in the interim!) and I did find this on the forum here- "NCR18650 (gray) cell is NOT high drain cell, and it is intended for up to 5.8A ."

(NCR (excluding hybrid NCR)=high capacity, less security)
