I just want everyone to know.....I am NOT blaming V4L for this. I have used many PTs from them and batts for that matter. This is the first auto that my daughter has used. It just scared her to death and it could have been a real bad thing if she had not went right back to it and found it when she did. I just wanted to remined everyone to be careful with PTs and not to walk away from them when they are plugged in.

I completely understand. It can happen to any of them. V4L doesn't make 510's (I think) and it happened to mine, too. Good reminder.

I had an auto PT that cut out a lot. I dont trust those autos! My house was broken into a little while back and they took my PT and all my menthol cartos. (haha tricks on them the PT was pretty much broken na na na) I have a manual now and it rocks. All my batts are manuals. they rock. Manuals rock. :3
Wait... someone broke into your house and stole just your pass thru and menthol cartos? sounds like someone with a really bad nic fit that needed help, or maybe one of those smoking monkeys that you see occasionally who wanted an upgrade!. Seriously though, I had my car broken into once and it felt reeally weird. They broke a window, threw the glove box contents into the back seat and stole the KNOBS off my expensive aftermarket radio- left the radio and the expensive speakers, just stole the knobs.

The PT that came with my starter kit ''exploded'' with a loud crack and a puff of smoke and died after using it for just one day. Now I never leave it plugged in and don't use it constantly to vape. It will stop working pretty quickly but I just unplug it and so far it will work again when I go back to it. It's an auto and I figured it would be my work horse but it's rather delicate it seems. I also now use a wall AC/USB adaptor.

GMM: No, I'm sorry. That's incorrect.

The USB port's power pin is +5vDC Regulated. Ground is Chassis Ground/Signal Ground combined on some, Signal Ground separate on others. Either is ok in the spec, although the latter is "cleaner".

The 110vAC and 12vDC adapters people are referencing put out 5vDC Regulated in the case of the V4L products and in common eBay'd adapters. Unregulated 12v to 5v step-down are also available, although not recommended for anything one would plug into them.

The 110vAC to USB Power adapters do a full wave (generally) rectification to DC through a diode bridge, then feed a regulator. The cheap ones are a 7805 fixed voltage regulator, the better ones are most frequently an NTE-1934 regulator or pin equivalent part. Either way, they put out a clean 1A or 2A (respectively) 5vDC,common ground, source.

And it needs to be noted: any of the ones using a 7805 or equivalent 1A max regulator are not suitable for low resistance cartomizers. 2A is the minimum you want (1.87A is typical max current draw with a LR cartomizer)

I stand corrected on the power output of a USB power output. I just found that doing a quick internet search. Though it stands to reason that if your adpater shorts this could fry what ever is plugged in, I have had this happen to audio equipment once when it was plugged into 110vAC. Though I have no idea if this is what caused the overheating and fire on the pass through. This is just from what I know from my electrical experiences.

A 120vAC adapter is electrically isolated from the DC side. It'd take more than a "short". It'd be a catastrophic failure. And plugging your PT into it would void the warranty... On both your house wiring AND your life. [shiver] That wouldn't be good.

The conditions to set that up are almost beyond imagining without really trying to be stupid. You'd have to bypass the rectifier, the filter caps, the regulator (and both sides are physically separated as well as electrically isolated), and somehow make contact with a pad on the LV side. A heavy piece of wire or a contortionist with a screwdriver maybe.

Easier to imagine the failure-state on a 12vDC to 5vDC step-down, but still very unlikely, and going to be noticed long before you see a fire.

It's much easier to explain with a failure state on the FET leading to the device remaining on for some extended period. The heat builds up enough that it melts the vinyl on the cartomizer.

Some people define "combustion" more loosely than we would in science.

My daughter uses a PT at work (she is a nurse)
She was vaping and walked away for a minute...when she
Came back the carto on the PT was on fire. Please do not keep them plugged in.
Thank God it wasn't plugged in to the computer and she wasn't gone long.
It was a auto passthrough.
Just thought I would let everyone know to be real careful.

Thanks for this post, Trish. It is very scary to learn the PT was auto. Unplugging mine now.
