The tongue is covered with around 9,000 taste buds that help us to detect sweet, salty, bitter or sour flavours, explains Professor Damian Walmsley, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association.
The taste buds themselves are a collection of cells on the surface of the tongue, each housing about 50 taste cells. The buds renew themselves every ten days to two weeks.
However, anything that causes inflammation, such as infections or smoking, can damage the taste buds and affect their renewal - deadening their sensitivity.

I don't know if this is the right place for this as I'm new but I thought people would find it interesting. It also has info on lungs and the liver and a few other important parts.

Peace!

I don't know about vaping because I haven't gotten my kit yet. But I know that other factors can play a large role as well. I used to weld a lot as part my job and I can say for sure that when I stopped welding after getting laid off I could tell within a couple of weeks that I had been missing out.

I also had a severe reaction to an ulcer medication that ended up completely peeling all the skin off my body including by fingernails and thumbnails and even inside my mouth nose and ears. I was completely without taste for about three weeks and then it slowly came back. I think it took about three weeks to leach all the medication from my system and then another two weeks or so to regain my sense of taste.

I smoked 2 packs a day for 36 years, I have noticed some improvement in my sense of smell, I just dont feel it is all that great of a improvement. I also noticed it within the first couple of weeks.

Maybe my sense of smell was never that far gone to feel it was such a improvement.
Also being winter time its hard to notice smell so much other than stink in the house.
Maybe in the spring I will notice it more than I do now.

Let me guess................
These were FDA approved drugs?

I think when we smoked for that long it takes longer to come back. I smoked for 36 years too and 6 months into vaping, I'm just noticing some smells I never noticed before.
I kept telling my husband there must be something wrong with my car because sometimes I can smell exhaust and I wasn't near any diesels or buses etc. just "in-town" traffic. He thought I was nuts... thats just the normal in-town traffic smell! LOL I never knew!
That was about a month ago... I have to say that's the one that sticks most in my mind. But, I can pick up the subtle fragrances around. I hate the smell of my floor cleaner - makes my nose burn now. So it has it good points and bad points. Oh, going anywhere near the perfume counter in stores wasn't that great before - now its absolute HELL!

I smoked cigarettes, pipes and cigars for over 45 years. Five and a half months after being off tobacco I went back to my regular tobacco store to get some cigars for a buddy of mine as Xmas presents. In the past everytime I walked in the front door it was 'Ahhhhh the smell of fine tobacco Ahhhhhhhhhh!' This time I walked across the parking lot and stepped up onto the sidewalk before even getting into the store I felt like I had walked into a wall of stink. I just stood there and marveled at it. That old, ahh, never showed up. It was just 'WOW I've never really stuck my nose into a week old ashtray before. PEWWWWW!!!!

Even inside the climate controlled walk-in cigar room, I couldn't wait to buy the damn things and get the hell out of there. Just an amazing experience.

Thanks Lalesa,

That makes me feel better knowing it may just take me a little longer because of smoking for so long.
I can smell things a little better, but Im looking forward to being able to taste and smell things really well again.

I tried twice to quit smoking, never made it past a week.
I keep reading about people regaing smell in a few days or a week and was wondering why I wasnt.

My Aunt said she watched a doctors episode about quitting smoking and they said in two months you regain taste and smell, so I guess I will see.

Thanks everyone.

Hi -

Just wanted to add my experience to this thread.

I smoked for 39 years 1.5 pks/day strong fliters.

Started vaping 6 months ago.

For 2 months I smoked AND vaped with vaping gradually becoming preferred.
I wasn't trying to quit smoking, just looking for an alternative.

As I began to prefer vaping I noticed a slight increase in taste and sense of smell.

I have some mild sinus trouble and use a CPAP machine (for 3 years) and had tried using a neti pot when I started CPAP to alleviate stuffiness without much sucess- neti pot was parked on a shelf.

As I was experiencing a preference for vaping at about 2 months, I decieded to give the neti pot another try.

After using the neti pot for about 2 weeks my sense of smell and taste came back with a vengeance! I haven't enjoyed smelling and tasting like this since
I was a kid!:w00t:

I haven't had a smoke since using the neti pot. Vaping is great with NO cravings for a ciggie. Also the nicotine strength (24-36mg) feels stronger and very satifying. I used to use snus and am enjoying that again as well. (for times when I cannot vape).

Due to this experience I think that the using the neti pot was essential for maximum vaping enjoyment for me. After smoking for almost 40yrs. I guess the cleansing action of neti was the key for getting my sense of smell and taste back. I am still surprised at how well it worked.:D

This makes me feel better too, as I've been off analogs for a month and notice no difference at all in taste or smell. I smoked 2 1/2 packs a day for 42 years so perhaps we just need a longer time to get it back. I'll just keep at it one day at a time... :)
