So the clone I purchased uses 1 18650 or 1 18350. From what i can tell, the 18650s hold more charge and are generally safer for low ohm vaping. The problem is the sentinel clone lists 68mm as the longest batteries it will hold, but all the protected panasonic, sanyo, and samsung cells range between 69 and 70mm.

So do I need to use protected batteries in this mech mod? it will be paired with a triton clone. Also are there any benefits besides charge between 18650 and 18350? What kind of batteries would you recommend (assuming a limit 68mm length)?

How low ohm are you going to vape? Sub ohm? If so, that requires a high quality IMR battery capable of putting out 20 amp cont. capacity. Only a few available. An AW IMR 18650 1600 mah battery or the MNKE IMR 1600 mah battery will work well for that application.

Otherwise, I suggest any high quality IMR by AW, Orbtronic, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, or Sanyo. IMR are a safer choice than a protected battery. IMR batteries use safe chemistry and do not require protection circuits. That doesn't mean that they won't vent if stressed far enough, but it generally means just letting off hot gases, and not with the explosive power that a protected Li Ion battery can do if it's protective circuit fails.

Using an IMR you will lose some mAh capacity for longer periods of vaping, but one will be inherently safer and have more actual load current than a protected Li Ion will. I suggest buying from a trusted vendor that specializes in these batteries: Genuine AW Batteries at RTD Vapor

You can learn these facts by reading this guide I made for ECF members on batteries:

I just did some research and yeah the 1600mA AW IMR (15 C rating) or the 2000mA AW IMR (10 C rating) appear to be the best choices. I probably won't start out immediately making sub-ohm coils but I want the opportunity to be there when I decide to do it. Although I do see a lot of people running .8 - 1.2 ohm coils on unprotected Li Ion batteries.

That 0,8 ohm range is kind of the cutoff/grey area for when amp load starts becoming important for batteries. By "unprotected Li Ion" I'm assuming you mean IMR's.

Anybody know the dimensions of the AW 18650s? They don't list them on the sites where they sell them
I almost positive any IMR will fit, including the AW's. Since they do not have the added protective circuit that many of the protected Li Ion batteries have which often adds length to those batteries.

While you are getting prepared to try your first RBA, I made another guide you should find useful:
