My brother-in-law is very intrigued by my vaping experience and the fact that I quit smoking with it. His birthday is coming up and I want to buy him a cig-alike. Why cig-alike? I know anything more advanced will turn him off at this point. I myself started off with Blu which was a big disappointment for me. Blu didn’t help me to stop craving for the cancer sticks at all. Then I switched to Vapor4Life. Much better but still not there. (Now, I am on a eGo-C Twist with various tankomizers, cartomizers, clearomizers.)

Sooooo, which cig-alike have you had a great experience with and that you think is good for turning someone over to vaping?

I got a starter kit from eversmoke as my first unit. It came with 2 automatic batteries, 40 cartridges, a USB charger and wall plug. The only negative things I can say about it is in order to continue to use it, I would have to keep buying cartridges, as the batteries are male and not thread to fit 99% of the other things out there. But the batteries last long, and it makes good vapor, etc. I didn't really enjoy the taste of the regular tobacco cartridges, but thats just me.

I also got a v2 starter kit because it was getting such great reviews. My opinion though is that its not as substantial as the eversmoke. Seems way cheaper and chinsy and the batteries die like immediately. But they charge up fast too.

In comparison to a real ecig, both of these things are junk. They were enough to get me hooked on the concept of vaping though.

I would recommend the Fin cig from Wal-Mart because of its simplicity, convenience and accessibility. My friend bought the deluxe kit for me for $30 and that included 2 batteries, 3 filled cartos and 1 USB/electric charger. It sells for $29.00. There are smaller starter kits as well. Their refill cartos come in tobacco and menthol flavors. Also, because it is 510 threaded your friend can try out Blu cartos on the Fin battery. I eventually moved on to blank cartos and juices.

Avoid the Encore brand - tastes ok, but you'll blow out a lung trying to suck anything in :p

The thing that turned me away from cig-a-likes is that (for me) they really didn't feel like cigs. They are hard, whereas a cig is smooshy. When I put the 808 in my mouth, it felt like a magic marker. They are also heavier in your hand - it just doesn't have that light feel of a cig between your fingers. They also don't burn down like a cig. You are always holding this thing in your hand. With a PV like an eGo, you hold it, vape and then put it down (or hang it on a lanyard.)

Sometimes I wonder if that's what turns people away from vaping. Once you realize that vaping is not smoking, it's a lot easier to make the switch.

Sorry I don't have anything on the EverSmoke or V2. However, my best friend and two of my sons who all think it is great that I have managed to quit smoking - it will be six months in a week - were just not willing to try something as "big" as a eGo Twist. Funny they are only the 650 mAh and once I got over needing a cig-alike I don't find them to be that big.

So - I ordered myself an eRoll to try and once they all saw and tried it - they decided they wanted one too. So far I don't think any of them have completely quit - but they are liking the eRoll. I gave up on my cig-alike (Colibri Nano) because I really don't like the cartridges. The eRoll is only slightly bigger and I am getting better flavor and vapor with it.

I also really love the PCC - no having to take anything apart - just put the complete unit in and a short time later it is all charged and ready to go again. Works great for those times when I want something smaller and less conspicuous.

So - something else to look into - I hope you find something that will work for your BIL.

I used V2, Volts, and some Innokin cig-a-likes before I migrated to a larger battery. I liked them all, but if I could have done anything differently, it would have been buying a charger case from the get-go. I truly believe that a charger case is the difference between cig-a-likes being a slow annoyance and being sustainable.

Think from your buddy's point of view: he's being asked to stop smoking and use these things instead. It gives the nicotine, it tastes ok. Q: What's the first big downfall he's going to notice? A: He can't get through his normal day without recharging it. That's a big deal if to a smoker who's addicted-mind doesn't really want to switch in the first place.

A charger case means he can have one object in his pocket that will give him the nicotine he craves as long as a pack of cigarettes would. If the battery can't make it through the day, the charger case really completes the system. I would have been much less frustrated over forgetting to charge ahead of time and bringing enough battery with me to make it till the next time I charge.

I have considered the eRoll also. See a lot of great reviews of it. Wouldn't mind to get one for myself as a out-and-about device. It looks great and it's small. But I just know that having to refill the tank is not going to do it for my bro-in-law - not until he really gets into vaping down the road anyway. I know you can get a adapter for it to take any 510 carto but it kinda ruins its look, which my bro-in-law will not appreciate.

I know what you mean. Blu almost turned me away from vaping if not for the info and knowledge I get from fine sites and forums like ECF. But on the other hand, newbies, myself include, all have this mentality that they "want" something that looks like a cig. and they use it like cig. It's a journey we need to go through, I suppose.

Mmm, going to check out Halo and Fin. Never heard of the Fin.

Anyone know the spec. for the EverSmoke and V2? Like mAH rating, threading and dimensions, etc. :sigh: It'll be so much easier if these companies put out the info. on their web site.

They are KR808D-2 batteries. 280 mahs. I found some thread adaptors for them from NWvapors which I'm excited to try. This way I can use other juice delivery systems besides the cartridges.

The carts they came with are technically disposal, but I found that they are fine to be refilled a few times with any juice flavor. They seem to hold 1-1.5 ml and last a pretty good while before emptying. I like to just drip a few drops into the hole too... seems to freshen up the taste again.

The V2s are kr808d-1 batteries. I'm not sure what mahs they have but if I had to guess I'd say like 90? They batteries do not last well at all. But, they do charge fast as well. So its not like you'd be up a proverbial creek if you had to wait for it to charge. They are much lighter than the d2s and overall feels much more similar to an analog. You can't open the cartridges though, so your only option with those is to drip into them. But, I have a thread adaptor for this as well, so I can use any 510 threaded carto which is awesome. These adaptors are very easy to come by... The ones for the d2s were hard to find.

Anyways... Thats all I know! Hope its at least partially useful. Good luck to your pal. You're a good friend for trying to hook him up. :)

i'm definitely in the same sort of "i want an ecig/pv that at least MOSTLY looks and feels like an analogue" camp. my heaviest cigarette/cigar smoking has always been when i am on the go (ESPECIALLY walking or driving places) and being a fairly small person with literally child-sized hands makes some of the larger batteries/mods/what have you (stuff i have tried from friends) not only impractical, but make me look somewhat goofy (and feel like everyone is staring! so NOT what i am going for!)! there are some DECENT disposables out there (and when i say "decent" i basically mean they will do in an absolute pinch) - among the 10+ kinds i tried before i went the rechargeable route, i agree that the njoy kings aren't too bad - if you don't mind blowing nearly $10 a pop for something that can last for a few hours of moderately heavy vaping to 15 minutes (i live about an hr outside nyc and had purchased 2 njoy kings for the trip, the second of which - and the last i bought - was blown by the time i was out of the lincoln tunnel!!). AT ANY RATE!! the first kit i bought was the blu starter kit which, in my opinion, really does a fantastic job in "recreating" the feeling of smoking analogues. however, my "praise" of the blu basically ends there - my batteries last me 15-20 mins MAX and at least 45 to charge, i have not had pleasant experiences with their customer service, and i have found the refill cartos not only to be insanely expensive as a legit cigarette replacement, but extremely dry and bland tasting compared with the cartos initially included in the kit (i have purchased the refills from a variety of vendors as well, so i am "assuming" distributor handling is not necessarily to blame). i do still keep my blus charged, mainly for VERY short drives and in case my other cartos/clearos run dry or i forgot to bring something while i am out (note: i did NOT mention battery drainage as a problem there!!). i have tried the v2 but wasn't thrilled - the vapour production seemed poor to me, but to each his own. what i am now using (and THRILLED with) are the smokeless image 78mm auto volts (i'm ordering a manual and deciding on an x2 just for comps) - i have had mine for nearly a month now, and with due care (i do keep everything very clean and i make sure to keep one charging while i'm using the other), i can honestly say that even vaping pretty heavily for several hours in a row, i have not experienced even one instance in which either battery has started to lose power on me (of course i probably just jinxed myself saying that!!) - my juice tends to run low way before my batteries do ... which is definitely a "problem" with which i can live. the size is great - bigger than the blu, no doubt, but it still fits very comfortably in my teeny tiny hands - the rubberised finish on some of the colours (not on my chrome/silver one but i still love it!!), like the njoy kings, really does make it "feel" more like an analogue. i ordered some of the si "xl" blank cartos and i must admit, i do prefer the "regularly" sized ones, both due to the overall resulting size of the volt units as well as they seem not to dry out as quickly on me, for whatever reason. so that's that! my apologies for being so terribly long-winded, but honestly i was and continue to be amazed by these si volts - they have helped me out in quitting the cigs/cigars more than i can say (i am a newbie, but it has been 2 days since my last analogue and i have been/had smoked for the 10 previous years - aaaahh starting in high school!!) - with good juice/liquid i have found myself actually preferring / reaching for my volts and getting somewhat disgusted by the thought of lighting an analogue when i used to NEED one (like first thing in the morning). i wish yinz luck and hope your brother-in-law can find the "perfect" ecigs!! with all the products and setups out there, the options seem pretty limitless and incredible!

I used the smokelessimage.com volt for a year before trading up. It's basically an 808 battery but done well at a reasonable price--the sealed automatics are no-brainers. The cartos are nicer than average too and you can refill them. Skip the kit with the portable charging case because it's crap honestly. A simple kit with a couple packs of cartos and a few bottles of juice will work well.

The problem, of course, is that even if you refill, you will eventually have to buy new cartos so it gets to be a bit of a hassle--but that's with every cig-a-like system.

There's an argument to be made for going to a nice ego battery which will give him more options to experiment with deliver systems.

I'd show him some basic options and see what he's up for. The point, I suppose, is to get him started as economically as possible with a system that he's comfortable using in various contexts.

Even after 3 years and trying Egos. Mods, etc. My all day is an automatic Volt 78 from Smokeless Image with their Nano. The Nanos only hold 1 ml but I can take a few filled ones with me. If I am going to be gone for the day I take the charger case. I found I really need the cig like feeling and they work for me.

So far NJoy and Volt get the most mentions. But NJoy is expensive for what it is.

It depends on the intent. If a smoker wants to try vaping then, for $7, an Njoy King will give them a great vaping experience with very little initial investment. If they decide they like it then they can spend the $50-100 for a decent kit. I would not recommend staying on the Njoys as they cost as much or more than smoking but for an intro they are really good. If a smoker has already decided that they want to transition to vaping then they should start with an intro kit and make the investment.
