While I fully support giving advice and encouraging people seeking to build their own coils, I really don't understand recommending it to someone who came here looking for a Nautilus Mini replacement. The amount of confusion (rightfully so) is unnecessary.

You can pick up the Nautilus X and achieve the same vape you're used to, with a next gen product. Purchase your 5 pack of coils, and it's done. If in the future your curiosity broadens, then you can do the proper research on safety when it comes to building your own coils.

Going from a Nautilus Mini, to building your own coils is a far reach for the vast majority of people.

I cannot find any kanthal wire at advanced supply.

@tara81, you can find any type of wire here with free shipping, just have to be an eBay member.:)

Great deals from TEMCo Industrial in Resistance-Wire- | eBay Stores

I used to love Kanthal, once I switched to 316L Stainless Steel, have no desire to go back. Have tried a few prebuilt Kanthal coils, as well as one a relative built from all of my collection given to him in my Smok TFV12 Cloud Beast. The taste was nasty after having used SS 316L for a couple of years. There's a minimal price difference & SS can be cleaned & reused many more times versus Kanthal.:)

Good Luck & don't overpay for high quality wire, TEMCo has the greatest selection at a fraction of the price of local & online vape shops. Have been buying from them by the 100 feet spools since early 2014, no issues & maybe best, fast & free shipping.:)

That's OK, TEMCo has a wide variety of Kanthal.:)

Make sure to burn it off, either with a pocket torch before building, or at a minimum, dry fire the coil in pulses after building & then rinse good before wicking. That applies to most any wire, regardless of where purchased, gets rid of any oils & traces of other chemicals used in the process of producing the wire, as well as spooling.:)

I don't mess with nickel myself, based on the advice of my supplier when I began doing my own coils with Kanthal.

What is a point of picking up something "next gen" to have the same vape somebody is used to... she wants something that gives her better flavor than she is used to ...I do not know if Nautilus X will give her better flavor because I never used it but I know for sure that... RTA... such as Siren 2 is capable providing much, much, much better flavor than my original big Nautilus... and such RTA boost in flavor comes with many extra benefits...

I do not think amount of confusion is as big as you think... specially for a person who vaped mini nautilus for 2 years... it is not person who knows nothing about watts, resistance and coils... making coil and wicking is not a very difficult... I started vaping 4 months ago and currently have 5 RTAs... if 60 years old man can do it I think it is not a rocket science.

+1!

We can chase 'next gen' until we're blue in the face.....or become broke & still will be a gen behind.:D

From what I gather, @tara81 wants to get into DIY coil building & then can find the sweet spot desired. Certainly there's a bit of trial & error (still is for myself), yet wire is so low in cost & can be reused for several more wickings, as long as it's not vaped until the cotton isn't fused to the coil. There are YouTube videos on how to, yet really it's the reversal of the initial wick, remove the cotton or whatever used gently, leave the leftover e-juice on, go outdoors & burn off in pulses until glowing red, rinse & rewick. Good to go.:)

Plus the flavor will be far better than one can get from most prebuilt coils, while some can be, many can't be rebuilt. DIY is the best of both Worlds, better flavor & saving a load of cash chasing the next sale on prebuilt coils. Or so it has been for myself & many others.:D

Hopefully @tara81 will find the right Kanthal & be on the way to the satisfaction of DIY coil building.:)

So i tried sub ohming again yesterday , and I realized the taste was really warm but not very tasty, then the coughing .. it tickled my throat too much to enjoy it ... the exhale was okay, same as my 1.8 ohm nautilis mini .

I tried 0.5 ohms on my kanger subtank mini, i tried 20 watts, no cloud, 25 watts, barely any flavor and cloud, 27 watts, coughting, couldn't inhale very long without coughing.. 30 watts... too strong (coughing) not enjoyable. Maybe I just need to get more used to sub ohming slowly. Sort of like how i slowly get used to changing my wattage on my nautilis mini from 8 watts to 10.5 watts. But now i got vapors tongue so ill just have to wait awhile before testing sub ohming again:eek: :tumble:<-- me waiting for vapors tongue to go away :nah:
Is your coil good? On the toptank mini which is like the subtank mini I use a .5 coil and between 18 and 20 watts (mostly 20) and I get good clouds and I MTL not direct lung.

That's about where I was when using the KangerTech SubTank mini.:)

Pushing over 20W usually ended with a burned wick. Yet the tank was designed for flavor, not clouds & in that regard, performed well.

that say everything.

I dont really agree tho,
personaly i use a pico mini to build on it, the battery cap is the perfect size for me to rest my fingers, so hold the coil in the middle ( i litteraly press it toward the air flow ), then i grab a pliers and round the wize around the screw.
Then correctly place the coil. Easy peasy

I see nothing complicated there. Sure, that less handy compare to somes more rescent post design. Totaly true.
But still, i have hard time to believe that setting a wire around a screw is difficult for anyone

If you use a coil size that fit that kind of small chamber i see no risk of touching & shorting.
Thats not a tank where you set 2.5 or 3mm coil... or super thick calpton, flat coil thing with 36differents wire, lets be real ^^
Imho, 2mm is the max you should use in it.
Personaly, i'am only using simple 0.3 kanthal, around 2mm 8 wrap, which lead me to 1.3omh.
And its just perfect ( at least for me ) with a low wattage
and the flavor are perfect, i taste what my juice smell.
And what cotton you use also help a lot for the flavor tho, recently used basic UD pad, and the flavor i get is better compare to when i use the native wick..

on the original, the airflow ring is pretty tight, and barely move ( unless you have somes juice inbetween the ring & the deck )
No problem unscrewing the deck without removing the ring.
+ considering how the air flow is on that tank, all honestly, you dont need to ever touch the airflow.
But i do agree that a not free spining ring would have been way better

The ubber tight air flow its only because of the SXK clone, which as i said, its a "bad" clone. ( i used it 5min then throwed it away, litteraly )
The SYMJ air flow is closer to the original one, ( more airy vs SXK ) and the original have an even better butter smooth air flow, that is ( for me ) perfect, not too tight, not too airy.
It change -everything-
I would NEVER EVER advise anyone to grab the SXK clone.

My only real con with this tank, its, since the deck is totaly flat, if you arent carefull when unscrewing, and not ready to soak up with a papel towel or so, you can end with juice on your finger.

All that to say, if you want to have a correct opinion on that tank ( for flavor & airflow ), try the real one

Hi woots, I purchased the SMJY doggystyle clone, and saw you mention to use 2mm diameter wrapping. Thanks for mentioning SMJY clone as the better one :) I also ordered some candy vape berserkers but they will take longer to be sent. What gauge is 0.3 kanthal? I saw a video explaining how to coil build for the doggystyle, and they used 2.5mm diameter wraps. So that is too difficult to do for a beginner right?

Did you order the Authentic Vandy Vape Berserkers (hopefully), or the clones of them? Also, did you get the 24mm full size or the 22mm minis?

ETA: As a beginner, you may want to order some Kanthal A-1 pre-wound coils that are available in 1.5 and 1.8ohms. They are very inexpensive from FastTech (about $3.49 for 100). All you have to do then is install them and wick them!

I've been using them in my Berserkers (minis and full-size) since I got them in January, as well as in some Kayfun Lite Plus "shorty" tanks for more than a year before that. Have also gotten some friends using them now, too. We can all build our own coils, but when these are so inexpensive, and easy to use...we figured why not use them!

I am doing nothing but KayFun RTA original/clones/styles and they work great. You can buy your own coils pre-made at specific resistance ranges if making coils bothers you at first. I do unflavored juice and it's pretty nice to have a decent vape that is so cheap that I don't even want to try to figure out how little I spend a day on the stuff.

I bought the authentic berserker mini 22 mm diameter and the clone smjy doggystyle. I bought some kanthal wire in 26 and 28 gauge and some coil rigs, ohm reader, wire cutters and cotton bacon. I never thought they sold premade coils in 1.5 and 1.8 ohms! I will have to check that out!

Here's some links to the Kanthal A-1 ones I've bought from FastTech and am using (1.3ohm in 28ga., and 1.5ohm in 30ga.) that are great, IMO:

$3.46 E-XY Kanthal A1 Pre-coiled Coil (100-Pack) - 28 AWG / 0.32mm dia. / 1.3ohm at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

$3.40 E-XY Kanthal A1 Pre-coiled Coil (100-Pack) - 30 AWG / 0.25mm dia. / 1.5ohm at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

They used to carry them in 1.8ohm, but don't any more evidently. They're still available from US vendors like Vapes.com and others though, but at much higher prices (when on sale = approx. $9.99/100)...still just a dime each though. However, they're a very thin gauge wire, and are more easily distorted when wicking them, if you aren't really careful.

I bought multiple packs of the 1.5ohm and 1.8ohm at first, and didn't even try the 1.3ohm, as I thought it would be too low for me. But later I finally did buy 1 pack and tried them. I liked them, too, and bought a few more packs of them as well. Because their wire is thicker...you can always unwind 1 or more of the wraps, too, and that gives you a higher ohm coil if you need it.

Well i said that to my opinion 2mm diameter wrapping should be the max to use with this tank ( Wasnt my intention to sound like "its what you have to do and nothing else" ), that's up to you to see if less, or more fit your taste ^^
As for the kanthal its 0.32mm 28ga the one i use, my mistake saying 0.3
I use this one
$1.42 Authentic UD Kanthal A1 Heating Wire for Rebuildable Atomizers - 28 AWG / 0.32mm*10m / 13.55ohm at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

Well, I suppose the video you saw about how to build a coil for the doggystyle was explanatory enough ?
But no nothing hard, its only a matter of finding your way to correctly hold the coil in the middle ( using the coiling rode ) then wrap the leg around the screw ( i personaly use a pliers for that ). Then screw that down tight, cut the leg excess, replace the coil in the middle, and you are perfectly fine :)

You just need to get used to it ^^

The "main issue" when you begin is just finding the right amount of wrap you have to do to get the resistance you want. And the correct amount of cotton too wick. So the voltage you will like.

Sounds like you're well on your way to learning all about coiling and wicking RTAs :). Don't hesitate to ask questions here if you have issues before you get frustrated with it.

I have 5 SJMY Doggies. Yes, I really like them . I've found a couple of subtleties with these things.

I leave out the O-ring at the top of the base where the plastic tank meets it. It's the one that goes in the groove marked '1':

10efo05.jpg

I tried it with that O-ring installed, it is in the parts package that comes with the Doggy, but I found it made it hard to take the tank off for refilling. I tighten the tank to the base very lightly, just tight enough so it doesn't unscrew by itself. It has never leaked like this. I also use a pair of small needle nosed pliers in the wick slots at '2' to make the base a bit tighter on the mod than I can with my fingers alone. I do all these things so I can reliably take off the plastic tank without having the whole atty unscrew. Don't over-tighten it, just enough so the base doesn't unscrew when you refill.

Once I started doing these things, the Doggy became completely reliable for me.

Best of luck with all this stuff!
