You could really open a can a worms with your question. The quintessential VW device has to be the Darwin. Unfortunately, the only reasonable way to get one is to buy one used. There are several import VW devices and most of them share basically the same tech like the Vamo, ZMax, sigelei ZMax, Anyvape, The Groove and others that I haven't mentioned. There are other options as well. The Kick is a module that fits into several tube style pv's that transforms a mechanical device into a vw. It's a bit of a hassle to set up but once you get the hang of it, your good to go. It boils down to what your comfortable with and how much $$$ you want to spend. Vapors will argue about which is best but the in the end the vape is essentially the same when you compare a ZMax to a Vamo. Some have confusing menus, some have OLED screens and others like the Evic have a full menu system, computer software interface and firmware upgrades. Soon another player will hit the field...The Janty MiD, another PV that has an extensive computer interface and too many options to mention here. Which one is the best...I wouldn't dare say. Just do some research here on the ECF and on YouTube. This is a great time period to get into variable power. Good luck!!!

I know most would say the ProVari is the best APV in general. But restricting the field to only those with a VW option, is there a general consensus on which one is best?

Money is no object in this case; I'm not asking which is the best bang for your buck, just which is the best.

I'd say the Sigelei Zmax is probably the best right now, but there are more vv/vw mods about to hit the market so we'll see. I don't have the Sigelei Zmax, I have Smoktech Zmaxs. Those are good, but the Sigelei has a thicker stainless steel casing, and has an OLED screen. Phil Busardo rated it very highly in his review:
A PBusardo Review - Sigelei Z-Max - YouTube

The Darwin used to be the best because it didn't have competition. Frankly I think the Darwin is outdated now, and it also doesn't have a removeable battery. Its arm for attachment is also of no use to tank and clearomizer users, which is most vapers. When I had the option to buy one I decided not to because there are better vw devices out now.

If you want a software interface and the ability to upgrade your pv firmware by computer download then the Evic is leading the way. Although its settings are not as accurate as a Zmax or some other vv/vw pvs from what I've seen. We haven't yet much user info on the Janty mid, which also has a computer interface.

There are others - among them the Vamo, the Anyvape CVI, and Innokin are releasing a telescoping vw mod, the SVD. But as I mentioned, at this point I think the Sigelei is the best. Even so, some of those others are pretty good too. I'm getting a CVI and will test out the new Smoktech Groove - that's a box mod that doesn't have a removeable battery.

For all the reasons Kiwi has mentioned, I tend to agree that the Darwin, while great in it's infancy, has been overshadowed by modern VW devices. The menu system was good, but the design was awkward, and the arm? Really? That thing is ridiculous... It's very cost prohibitive, if you can even find one... No replaceable battery just sends it on the downslope of the hill, IMO... So with current day options, I wouldn't even consider the Darwin...

There are relatively few "mainstream" VW devices out there right now... The ZMax not-so twins... Anyvape CVI, eVic, VAMO. Probably some others I have failed to mention here...

Now, this is just my opinion, but I prefer the Vamo for ease of use. The UI of the SmokTech ZMax is similar to the ProVari, and the Sigelei and Anyvape UI's are almost identical, all three of which use a single button to access all features of the APV. It takes a lot of button presses to get what you want. It may be "easy" to perfect the UI, but pressing a button 4 times to get to option "X" is not as easy as pressing a button once to perform the exact same option. In fact, having to press one 4 times is quantifiably 4 times more difficult than it is to press it once... I'm sure you get the point... LoL... The eVic has a pretty revolutionary UI, and really it's more of an OS in there, with software upgrades and the whole bit... But, it's far from perfected, and IMO Joyetech still has a lot of work to do on the eVic UI, in addition to the hard electrical limitations of 5V / 11W max settings (most VW devices have 6V/15W max).

The Vamo has three buttons... A Fire button, and a plus and minus... Anything you want to accomplish is easily done within seconds... You pass up the number by .5W or .1V? No problem, go back the other way... With the single button you have to back out of the menu system, go back to power up or power down respectively and press away again...

They all have VERY similar performance, eerily similar in fact... All operating their PWM circuits at the exact same frequency, one could assume they all use the same circuitry to control power regulation. So, with that assumption in place, you can assume that accuracy and their ability to fire your attachment of choice are all going to be the same. Really only a few other factors to consider after that... Build quality, in which case I would say the Sigelei and SmokTech ZMax are probably the kings. Appearance... Again, I like the ZMax... Ease of use, I like the Vamo.

Ultimately when I made my choice, I weighed ease of use higher than the other factors. The Vamo just also happens to be the cheapest of the lot, so that was an added bonus.

Now, all that said, if Joyetech ever fixes all the things I don't like about the eVic, being the big geek I am, I'm gonna have to jump all over that...

Really, it's so subjective with these things... In the end they all apply current to a tiny coil to vaporize liquid, and in a blind test of vapor quality from one to the next, I'd contend you will notice no difference at all from one to the next...

Now, this is just my opinion, but I prefer the Vamo for ease of use.

I have two Vamos. I think they definitely have an easier to use menu. And being able to use two sizes is a great feature. But for looks and overall build I think the Zmax is better. I've been hard pressed to pick a favorite between the two mods though.

I'm very happy with both my Sigelei Zmax, and Joyetech eVic. Both do the job extremely well for me right now. I use SmokTek 6ml locking tanks, with 1.5 ohm DC SS carto's. Haven't touched a "dirty" in almost 3 weeks now! And that's saying something... I smoked a carton a week for 35 years.

Good luck in your venture, there are so many good sites, reviewers, and vendors right now!

Ha ha... I would have to agree with everyone here... Trying to answer this is like trying to tell someone what the best juice it... In my opinion, I have a Zmax and a Vamo... I prefer the VAMO simply because the menu system is easier to use... However I like the look and feel of the Zmax better. I am also considering the EVic and the Anyvape to add to my aresenal... each is different and unique in their own way... each has its own " hits and misses ". My suggestion would be go to PBusardos site and watch all of his reviews and find which one suits your needs, wants and desires... Good luck my friend. On a side note, I see a lot of people posting about " problems " with their " cheap knock offs "... I haven't had any issues with mine as of yet.

I have not had the opportunity to try the Vamo or zmax. I do have the eVic and the new 1.2 firmware has made it pretty awesome in my book. I vape using VW and I can see the Voltage and OHM's on the home screen. Pretty nifty. It delivers the power that I need using LR Clearo's (1.9 OHM @ ~8W/4V). Sometimes I will quickly up the power if I flood a bit, and easily drop back down when the flood has been vaped off.

I might also get a Provari if they come out with VW.. and would love to try the other options on the market. Too many toys and not enough money :)

Good luck!
