can't remember why 0 F is that. Maybe mercury

First, I was off a bit. Fahrenheit developed it in 1724.
The centigrade scale don't come along until 1744. (Renamed in honor of Andrew Celcius' work)

History of measurement systems is intriguing.

0 is the temp of a 1:1 brine solution (equal amounts of ammonium chloride and water).

He the based it on the Rømer scale(from 1701), multiplying by 4 to eliminate fractions (60 being the boiling point of water).

One of the goals was setting 0 such that negative temps were uncommon.

The multiples were for ease of marking.
So 64 steps between freezing water and human body temp (32 and 96).

I like Fahrenheit because I seldom need negative numbers and it's a finer scale, so less need for fractions. While not as much of a pain today, it's sill easier to use positive whole numbers.
