you guys have a tax *day*?

ours is anytime between 1st july and 31st october

the new program rocks, since employers etc need to do group certificates digitally

so you just enter tax file number, click "auto fill" and add any deductions. takes 5 minutes tops, unless you have things like rental properties

Yep. It's usually April 15th. This year, it fell on a Saturday. Also, Monday the 17th was Emancipation Day in DC. Yeah,...first I've heard of it, as well... Either way, it pushed the deadline to file to the 18th.

Worst day of the year...

I need a drink....

ah...

"Emancipation Day is a holiday in Washington DC to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act, which president Abraham Lincoln signed on April 16, 1862. It is annually held on April 16."

Ours is April 30th. Most people, however, file early as you're more than likely due for a refund (thank you socialist taxation, which errs on the side of "we'll take more than we need just in case").

This makes tax season the time to plan a vacation or eye up that new set of golf clubs... or in my case, a SS CC (plus a set of golf clubs).

same here

Taxable Income Tax On This Income (New Rates)
$18,201 to $37,000 19c for each $1 over $18,200
$37,001 to $87,000* $3,572 plus 32.5c for each $1 over $37,000
* $87,001 to $180,000 $19,822 plus 37c for each $1 over $87,000
$180,001 and over $54,232 plus 47c for each $1 over $180,000

but taxed on a pay to pay basis as 1 level up just in case

so under 18k, even though you don't pay tax that low, 19c in the dollar gets deducted
18-37 32.5c

then you get the excess back

They have the best accountants though. So like the homer pic someone posted and they get most back

A great accountant is worth their weight in gold, literally. When I owned my own business someone had given me a recommendation for an accountant, I met with her and was put off at the fees she charged. After the first year, I would have paid (almost) anything she wanted.

The US tax code is so convoluted it's ridiculous.

IMO, the only "fair" way to do it is reduce annual tax filing to a 3x5 card with 2 lines, "How much did you make?" and "Send 10% of line 1".

Hi, Corey and everyone! Busy as usual, but just wanted to stop by. Made it through tax day. I've got pretty good at paying my quarterly estimated taxes and this year I am getting a tiny refund, and I mean tiny! But it's better than paying more. Hope everyone is doing well here in CC land!

Hey Paul :)

My philosophy is that if you are getting anything more than a small refund, and I mean very small, you're giving the government an interest free loan. I'd rather owe a little and know that my money is working for me and not the government.

You would think they would at least appreciate us for the free loan :|

I usually do owe a little bit, maybe $100 or so, but this time, I had a few extra expenses to write off and it pushed it over. I remember the day of working at a regular job and ending up with 5-8,000 refund. That's a lot that the government got to use for free until it got returned to me.

Nobody I know, that makes any decent amount of money, gets anything back. Seems that we always owe more. :(

Hai, Aal_ !!! :)
I got almost $7K back. :D

But that's thanks to not showing about $21K and claiming my 3 kids.

OTR Truckers have the option of taking a portion of their income as untaxed and putting it as a per diem reimbursement.

$63/day on the road currently.

I'm under a load every day except maybe Christmas vaca.

So $63*360 tax free and not counted toward my gross.

After adding incentives like cell phone reimbursement, my income is i think nearly $30K more than what's reportable.

ETA: My NET is ALWAYS more than my Gross. By quite a bit.
