Series in a bare metal case like that would be an accident waiting to happen IMO. Any breach of the battery wrap would cause a short.

So how would that differ from any other battery configuration where the battery wrap is damaged?

In parallel, - is - and + is +, always. Assuming a - down config.,... the body of the mod, and the case of the battery are -.

In series,... you have one battery feeding into another. -+-+, So, if there were a breach in the battery wrap,.....boom! :|

Boom, bad. :(

i'm not really seeing the difference here. How is that different for batteries in parallel?

For example, in a single battery mechanical device such as a tube, the polarity matters because the switch can be bypassed and that can occur if the wrap is damaged. So installing batteries upside down can be an issue.

As for boom - i really don't think there's much evidence of that and i speak as someone that has had a battery explode on a charger. It's just not like that these days and if you consider the number of people that hold lithium batteries to their ears called phones...

I'm assuming here that in the fine tradition of electricity, it has no idea if you are using one battery, many batteries or how they are connected, but it seeks the same shortest path. What i don't understand is why the battery configuration would make any difference at all.

One cell would have the negative connected to the mod case. The positive of that cell would connect to the negative of the 2nd cell for series. If the battery wrap on the 2nd cell had a tear or weak spot that allowed it's outer shell to touch the mod case it would mean that the 1st cell would have both negative and positive effectively touching the mod case which would be a direct short. With a non conducting mod case that wouldn't happen.

With a negative end down configuration, the metal body of the mod is negative, as well. The case of your battery, the part shielded by a battery wrap, is also negative. Therefore, if there is a hole in the battery wrap, and the battery case is in contact with the inside of the metal mod body, no big deal. They are electrically the same: Negative.

In series, one battery's positive is in contact with the other battery's negative.

This would mean that if the case of the 2nd battery had a break, it would be the same as touching the positive end of the 1st battery straight to the inside of the mod, which is negative. No bueno.
