So what is the day to day advantage of the 7068 over the 7075 for the average user?
Is it that much harder and bulletproof to warrant higher cost and wear & tear on milling equipment?
Just curious.

IMO it's more about scratch and dent resistance. If you are able to dent the 7068 you are doing something very wrong. 6061 on the other hand.....

Heya, Tom! I'm using a 2-1/2" face mill, with indexable cutters. I'm only taking 10 thou. at a time. I started off trying to take 20, but it was hateful... Slow and steady....
You could take more, especially with flood coolant, I'm just looking at tool life, and trying not to knock the mill out of tram...

3mm DOC??? that's dang near 125 thou.... Das a deep cut!

That 3-5mm is cutting slots for batteries and or boards. I'm not so concerned about making it beautiful until the last 2 passes. I'm using some crazy sharp 3 flute mills which helps as well.

I remember Russ SxD doing a video awhile back with the REO demonstrating how bulletproof they were and I think they are made from 6061. I have a 3 1/2 year old mini that I beat the hell out of and still running strong. granted it has surface scratches and dings on corners from dropping but still tough little guy. I upgraded to the 7075 and got a few small surface scratches already but I don't think dents will be an issue unless I drop it from an overpass on the highway!
That 7068 should be a beast!!

Cool,.....but overkill..... With a smooth finish, it'll scratch up just like 6061 and 7075, though I believe it will be a little more scratch resistant. Even Stainless, with a smooth finish, scratches up from normal use.... At the end of the day,....it's still raw aluminum...

Yep it's overkill... But the extra scratch resistance is a plus You're right though aluminum with a smooth finish will still scratch Any other finish options that would be more scratch resistant??

I think that's sorta the point of a brushed finish (vs. a smooth polished one), it's essentially a a whole slew of scratches (all going the same direction) that make any new scratches less noticeable and is relatively easy to restore.

Hey, Markie! I think maybe your friend has a Tmod, as I've never built a 26650 mod, and I definitely don't do regulated... Hit up Tom over at Tmod Customs. Or better yet,... Hit up the other Tom over at Catfish Atty Mods. He's got a new DNA 200, regulated mod coming out. He'll get you fixed up.


To Rossum's point, yes indeed, that is the purpose of the brushed finish. The thing is,... the smoother the finish, the more scratches show up, especially if they go against the grain....

To Nauti's question, bead blasted would probably be a good option for scratch resistance, but you already have a 7068 mod that's blasted, so you already knew that...

My buddy Wes, with the blast cabinet,... will be going on vacation Friday... He'll be gone until the 12th...

I could put a rougher textured brush to it.... That'd help keep scratches from showing as much...

For me, I'm not concerned so much about scratches because they are going to happen just from pocketing them. One thing nice about this finish that Corey does is that it's so easy to restore like new with a little scotchbrite. I think scratches will happen no matter how hard the alloy. It's trying to restore the mod to like new condition that will be harder with a tough alloy.

I am with you on this, the pads work great.

the brushed gets scratched.... it can be fixed easy at home with a little sanding. the blasted gets scratched too but is more likey to show wear in the way of shiny or polished spots from the pocket or holster you have it in.... it has to be reblasted to be restored to the original finish. there really is no way to product our mods from showing the use we give them. take care of them the best you can and pick a finish style that you like personally cause either way its a pretty easy fix.

If I remember correctly it took about 3 min per pass to mill a corner on the 7075. How long to do the 7068??

Biggest benefit to owning 7068 anything is knowing you've acquired near unobtainium.

Though I hear you pay for that prestige as well.
