will I be missing out on anything apart from longevity of not having to refill doing this instead of putting a carto in a tank?

My cartos last longer in a tank, and give a much better vape. The taste is better because you're not going from full to dry, full to dry constantly.

Out of a tank, my cartos went from a wet/cooler vape to a hotter/dryer vape all day. With tank- consistent ALL day, and no fear of that bad burned hit.

Then again, I never topped off a carto all day, that would have helped things, but might as well be dripping then.

Thanks, how does it look without a tank and with a Cone on?

For an example here is my "going out" setup...

The longevity thing is the biggest thing with using just the cartomizers and omitting the tank. No real different in flavor or life of the cartomizer in my experience. But I don't "drip" the juice in...I always use a needle topped bottle. Many vendor sell them and they come with a little cap you can put on the blunt needle so that you can carry it around in a case or whatever. They are cheap, and very efficient. MUCH better than dripping sappy little drops in there! lol! If you take to the needle top bottle, you will probably want to eventually get a bottle (or however many you need for your flavors) with luer lock top so you can put a longer sharp needle on there. They are even better. Anyway...with those needles it's so simple to top off the cartomizer it's just about mindless, so it's not any more hassle than you make of it. It is true in some cases that using a tank may "cool" the vape just a bit. I haven't really noticed that, but some people say they have.
