That is not how they used to be. However, they might have changed them for safety reasons. There has been a lot of talk about venting in case a battery go bonkers. I think pipe bomb is a term that has been spread around. I'm sure you can just ask jay, he is a great guy and will let you know for sure. If you bought it second hand my guess would be that someone simply drilled a hole for safety reasons.

Like others have said, I am pretty sure if you bought it new then that is just the way they are now. Also, not sure if you were implying this but the hole in the bottom would not have anything to do with an airy draw.

The only suggestion I can think of for the airy draw is to screw on you atty or carto and then use an allen wrench to move the center post up until it stops, that may or may not help.
