Precisely.
The term 'mod' comes from people wanting something better and modifying or making it.
With the profusion of ready made devices these days I've seen DIY trail off quite a bit, but some nice contenders in the high end custom market come into their own.

Am researching making my own too.
My main advice is be certain you are using the appropriate gauge/type of wire, and all other electrical parts, for the job.

Simple Ohm's law calculations will tell you what to expect for amperages and most quality wire/switches/connectors/etc will have ratings.
Err on the high side to be safe, and use a battery that can handle the drain.

It's very easy to drive a lot of current with these devices and a fuse is also a very good idea, especially for non-regulated mods.
