Brand new coil builder here

Just started rebuilding my Protank 2 coils and I'm getting leaky coils. I know, same problem as hundreds of other people it seems. Problem is they are only leaking from the bottom. I'm not getting any leaking or gurgling through the mouthpiece/drip tip. I can't seem to find any one with the same issue. I'm using 30g kanthal with cotton ball wicks and a piece of cotton above the coil, like a flavor wick. Is this just a case of using too much wick? I've tried adjusting, using a little bit less wick, and some coils leak less, but all the ones i've done still leak a little bit. Any info would be appreciated and if I'm leaving any info out, let me know. Thanks!

First thing first, check you o rings and make sure those are still intact and not "hard" they should be firm but not tough. Then as far as the amount of wick used: you want it to be snug but not tight. I pull the cotton through slowly till it becomes a little resistance then i stop and un roll the ends a bit making them fluffy. At this point go ahead and put a few drops of juice directly onto the coil. When the coil gets wet the wick will expand making it tight. If you pull cotton originally till it is tight then wet it will cut off the wicking ability, and vice versa if the cotton is too lose. I never used an extra cotton flavor wick when doing my pro tank builds but that is up to you.

i hope this helps.

Yep, I second the above poster, generally, if your rebuilt heads are a little leaky, you want to use more cotton. I pull enough through, trim it, fluff it, then I add a teeny tiny flavor wick on top to prevent flooding. Prime your cotton wick with enough liquid to saturate it. Also, the rebuilt heads with cotton can take a bit more wattage/voltage than the stock heads, so try cranking it up (slowly) until you see a noticeable increase in flavor and vapor. Not too much though, or you will get a burnt cotton flavor, and that is simply GROSS!!! Good luck to you!

Roll the cotton tightly before putting it through the coil. If your cotton is too fluffy, then even if it feels tight against the inside of the coil, since there is not enough cotton to counter the liquid pressure it will most likely leak.

Roll the cotton tightly in your fingers and make sure the end result has roughly the same diameter as the inner diameter of the coil, so that when you pull it through you feel a slight resistance.

Basically, flooding/gurgling/leaking in a rebuilt Protank head means not enough wicking material. Burning flavor or light hits means too much wicking material. It takes a little while to personalize your wick to your exact vaping style and viscosity of e-liquid. With trials and practice, you will find the perfect amount for the way you vape and for the pg/vg ratio of your juice. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I built a new head for the same tank last night and it's working much better, still slight leaking but nowhere near what i was getting before. I didn't realize going in how hard it was going to be getting the wick just right, everyone on here and in videos make it seem so easy.

No kidding. My first micro coil turned into a slinky. Until I ordered a thicker(?) size kanthal I just made regular looking coils, but they work GREAT! One did leak all over the place last night but I didn't have the headed turned tight. Hand and battery full of juice. Sticky. :?:

More than the normal couple dots, the connector almost gets covered sometimes. I'm starting to think it might be my device (or how I'm using it), the itaste VTR without the spinning connector. I had the 30s tank that it comes with connected to it all day and got the same leaking. I think it was sitting upright most of the day, so that may be an issue as well. I need to try it on another device to check.

Finally got in to talk to someone at my local shop and confirmed what Doublek said, bad o-rings. Kinda sucks that the rings wear out so fast but on the positive side it's nice to get confirmation from someone experienced that I'm making decent coils. Really appreciate all the replies on here, hope to get to the point where I can start helping others as well. Thanks everyone!
