Ive put together quite a bit of money to invest in making my own dna 30 box mod. Im an engineer by career and im fairly proficient with a soldering iron. My only struggle at the moment is where to start. What are the better place to buy parts and if anyone has any imformation how to get ahold of an metal box made/c&c/cut to build from..

I think the DNA30 is the same size--however it's power requirements are different--it needs more power than the DNA20 to be able to fire at 30 watts.
You can get tactile switches on ebay as well as project boxes.
The DNA30 you can get from evolv--as well as look at spec sheets.
I used a sony 30 amp 18650 for my DNA20--2 of them in wired in parallel should provide enough power to run a DNA30 well.

I've been meaning to look for info on this myself. All the parts are out there and readily available. Just a matter of having the time/money to experiment, and get it right.

510 Atty ...'y here:
510 Atomizer Connector, Assembled

While I've seen some jokers using cheap plastic project boxes, a la Radio Shack, most quality builders are using Hammond's metal 1590 Series enclosures. The same ones typically used for housing guitar effects pedals.

The 1590's are Die-Cast Aluminum, and in perfect sizes for a mod. Problem is that a DNA mod requires some unique machining for both the screen and USB port.

Back in the day they only sold raw, solid boxes, unpainted and un-drilled. Now there's companies out there who not only offer painting service, but also offer custom drilling services on a minimum order (usually 10+ pieces). It's not cheap ($3 per hole for the first 6 holes, $.25/ea after that), but if you were doing a resale at the going DNA mod prices, you can make out nicely. Enclosure Drilling

Trouble is, if you only want one or two drilled enclosures you're screwed. I'm not aware of anyone who will do the custom drill pattern necessary for the DNA screen on a smaller order than cited above. If anyone does, please reply. I suppose just buying the bits, and supplies to effectively drill and bore aluminum would be more cost-efficient for a small batch of 2/3 mods. It's just a headache I'd rather avoid altogether.

What could you possibly have against plastic project boxes? I've built 5v box mods, bucked and boosted, in plastic boxes and they looked mighty sharp. Also, you really don't think Radio Shack makes their own boxes, do you? They are made by Hammond

There is no special machining needed to make the necessary holes for a DNA mod. Let's see, 4 holes needed for the switches and 510 connector. I would suggest a Mamu screen cradle for the screen and then you can just drill four small holes to line up your cuts and then use a cut-off wheel on your Dremel to cut it out. As for the USB, it is optional but it still only requires a couple small holes drilled and then a little patience with a file and you're done.

Search "mamu" she is a genius with DNAs in all kind of boxes and has many step by step.... and part sources...:toast:

I know this is kind of an old thread, but wanted to add to the discussion. I am also building my own DNA 30 mod. I am using the hammond enclosure like most. As for mounting the DNA itself, I found a place called Shapeways and there is a design on there that mounts the DNA and screen and buttons, even the charging port. All that is required is one large square hole. Easy to make for pretty much anyone. I'm still in progress of building, but I have done my first power up and everything looks to be working well.
