You're probably refering to is "Dry Burning". It's done to clean the atomizer coil. Once a coil gets dirty enough it won't perform anymore, you can rinse of the liquid residue, then dry fire the coil to burn off the remaining junk. I just want to add that you should always give try burning a try before tossing the coil. Saves money in the long run if you can extend the life a bit...
