All my 510 cartomizers have small amount of taste to them but nothing like burning fibers when they are new.

Are you filling the all the way to full saturation?
I like to fill my cartomizers until the last drop I place in it sits at the top for a while before being absorbed.
Then I stand it up by placing the cart condom back on it just a tiny bit.
After I've let it sit for around 5 minutes to fully absorb, I look inside and see if I can see any dry patches, if so I drop in a few more drops and wait another minute or so. Finally I squeeze the condom and let it go pretty fast to see if the suction draws any excess liquid out, if so I do a light blow out and clean up the threads with a paper towel.
Its now ready to vape.
Hope this helps you,
-Dee

Short answer: Yup, the black flecks pretty much mean they are toast.

If you switch immediately to a new cartomizer you will notice that TH will increase and that the old one had a slight burnt taste.

Whenever I'm refilling my cartomizer, I take the time to shine a light into it and look for small globs of burned material. sometimes you will notice that the tube is slightly occluded and difficult to draw on. At an advanced stage you might notice that the inner tube gets more exposed as the underlying material is burned away.

Whenever I see these signs I sigh and prime up another cartomizer so it's ready to go in a couple of minutes. There is a thread about burning cartomizers that can be found here. Have they fixed burning cartomizer issue

Thanks, Dee. What about the occasional tick? The one I'm vaping now is making a single tick with each draw. Could that be the sound of fiber burning? Is the burning something that can happen right away - none of the three has had a lot of use? I'm using an adapter. Does that have any impact on the burning issue? As you might have guessed, cartos are new to me this week. I really appreciate your expertise!

It has pretty much been proven that no matter how well you care for your cartomizer, the burning process begins immediately to a certain extent. There is anecdotal evidence that the popping is indeed burning material. One of the members in the above link took some filler material and put an open flame to it, the member reported that it made the same noises that can be heard when vaping.

As for how an adapter will impact the rate of burning, there is no issue here as long as you are indeed using an ADAPTER.
If by an "adapter" you mean a passthrough and not something that converts the screw in bit (threads) then yes, possibly. A passthough may or may not be delivering 5 volts to the cartomizer causing it to reach a higher temperature.

Personally, I use these cartomizers on a 5 volt regulated box mod that I made myself and I love them. There is currently a new type of cartomizer being sold market as the Edition 2 or E2. In the description the manufacturer states that it contains no cotton filler, these may have different properties in regards to burning, or lack thereof. I haven't managed to get my hands on any of them so I can't tell you either way. There are some reviews and concerns about them here on the forums. There is a coop starting for these at this link ( You may need to be in the "Pay it forward" social group to get to the link) E2 cartomizer PIF CoOp

No, I'm not using a passthrough. I bought an adapter for my 801 so that I could try the 501 cartos and I really like them! Since I have several 801 manual batteries, I figured this was the most economical way to try them. I will never go back to atomizers and am wondering if I should invest in a bigger battery for 501 cartos or just stay with the present arrangement. I think I'll bide my time until I learn more abut the porential problems with cartos. You've really been a big help. Thank you!!

an update. apparantly in my confusion i must have forgotton to put juice in the carto, so it was a burning taste.
however i still toss a carto about one a day because eventually after so many refills they give off a burnt taste anyway.
does anyone find this to be so. or maybe i am just waiting too late to refill and the fiber burning process has started before i refill.

The fibers will burn everytime. Keep it wet, they will burn up slower. Let them get dried and they are toast. Normally, cartos used to last me 2-3 days, maybe 5-6 refills. Then I'd notice the taste degrades and toss them. With the GG AFS however, my last carto lasted 2 weeks at 7.4V!!!! In the AFS, the carto stays wet all the time as long as you top your tank off. They can take higher voltages and last alot longer in the AFS.
