I'm running a KF 3.1 with a 0.8Ohm coil on a nemesis (18650 Efest battery). At the moment I'm getting a tank of enjoyable vaping before I get hit by an acrid burnt taste. This happens no matter how much or how little wick I use. I've noticed the wick will stay saturated during this but the coil will be black and the wick seems to look as though the eliquid has been caramelised.

At the moment I'm using 75/25PG with Capella Apple flavouring, 3.5% distilled water. I haven't really tried any other juices at this resistance so the two main areas of interest for me are: airflow and heat tolerance of the Capella Apple. With the airflow control screw completely removed, I get the same problem. With it all the way in: same problem. As for the eliquid itself, I'm not sure. I'll probably try a few more flavourings and ratios.

It would be easy to see a wicking issue if the wick wasn't so ....... saturated even with the burnt taste. Hmm.

Heat could, of course, be a contributing factor. I am pulling around 17W on average.

What's your diameter of your coil? I had the exact same issue with a similar resistance microcoil that was 1/16 ID. Similar resistance coil (maybe. 9 ohm) around a 5/64 bit fixed my dry hit issues. I think that with the sub ohm resistance I was never able to wick enough juice through the 1/16 coil to avoid this problem, no matter how careful I was with the density of cotton.

It does leave a good amount of room. I think that's why I've never really had a problem with my cotton being TOO tight in the coil. Just one of the bumps in the learning process I never had to hit. I use a set of locking hemostats to hold my wire and wrap around the screwdriver, every coil is tight and perfect

I usually wrap around a 14G blunt needle, so the diameter is probably around 2mm.

I was having this problem also I increased the diameter of my coil and it went away :) In my case it would burn the wick in the coil at first glance everything appeared ok but after pulling out the wick I could see the black spot on my wick Thats all it took a little burnt spot on the wick in the coil and dry hits and awful taste

Thats unfortunate I have never had that issue did you try the build in the link I posted? with the bigger diameter coil something about that build works real good for me :)

Update: It seems to happen most when the eLiquid level drops just below the bottom of the glass section. I'd say there's about 1ml left in there when this happens. I'm getting it right now on a coil built to 1.3Ohms.

Any leaking? Sounds like you are losing vacuum seal when you drop below the clear section and it stops wicking so well. I wonder if replacing the oring around plastic tank part will help.

I've tried denying this to myself but a lose seal somewhere sounds like the potential issue. From early on I noticed a leak that seemed to be coming from where the bottom metal section screws onto the base.

It's bothering me so much I tried to give up Vaping today. I think I managed around 19 hours. Picked up my mod around an hour ago to inhale some of that sweet nectar. :p

I did. Well, that tutorial basically did everything the exact same way as me anyway! I've tried mounting the coil diagonally and facing straight on but with no luck. Before I was setting the wick before screwing the evaporation chamber on (as Riptripper shows) so I tried the other way and it's the same deal.

Not sure if this will help, but I found out my wicking issue...all the videos I watched (except the one I posted) everyone talked about how with cotton "less is more" well...in my case it was opposite. I was using not nearly enough cotton. After I watched the above video, I did just like what was instructed. I used about 1/3 the width of a unrolled organic cotton ball...pushed it down just as the video demonstrated. Two days now, with PERFECT wicking. I was about to sell kfl before my final attempt. So glad I didn't! Best atty I've ever vaped from. Good luck man!

EDIT- actually I didn't post the video on this particular thread. Steamer did! ; )

I'll try following it word for word next time. I've always been told to use an amount of cotton that touches all of the inner coil but doesn't put up any (or very little) resistance when threading it through. However, I've seen people like RiPTripper putting a huge wad of cotton through and simply twisting the cotton when threading it to get it all the way through. I've tried both ways. Normally I thread cotton through and if it bunches up I strip away some like peeling a banana.

I agree about the Kayfun - it's a fantastic advice. When I've got it to work, it's simply amazing for the first two tanks and then it just goes bad. Today I've stripped it all down and put it to soak in some distilled water and I'm going to clean it and dry it before replacing the O rings (just in case) and doing a build exactly like the one in that video.

I'm not going to give up on it. For now I'm using an XL carto on an eGo-C and a Nautilus on an MVP 2 until the Kayfun has dried and put back onto the nemesis.
