I'm currently vaping Mother's Milk and Unicorn Milk, both in 12mg. Using a Protank 2 on either an istick or Tobeco Hammer Clone. On the hammer, everything is great, but my flavor is funky on the istick, especially so with Unicorn Milk. I rebuild the protank, cause I'm too cheap to buy coils when I can make them up myself. Using Rayon for wick. I've tried running from 1 ohm up to 2 ohms, but I keep getting a burnt taste. My wicks aren't burning, and I'm getting plenty of vapor. I've tried micro coils, macro coils, touching, spread, you name it. 28, 30 and 32 awg, just about every configuration you can think of. I'm all the way down at 3v. Any thoughts? This has only been happening for the last week or so, before that, with the same juice and coils, everything was great. Every now and again I'll get a stretch of good hits, but I can't seem to find any constant variable. I'm stumped.

So you have built similar coils without having the burnt taste?

Where's Rydan when you need him? In addition to not having a buck circuit (the ability to regulate down), there's something different with the Istick. I'll report what Ryedan said when I find it. Basically, it's running hotter than the Hammer.

ETA: Susan knew it, see her post below. Mean vs. RMS.

That was my next step...2.5-ish. I've read that the isticks are a bit over-powered. I'm actually not minding the trial-and-error at all, and my coiling has really improved.

The one I have is definitely over powered. I hardly move from the lower power settings, but hey nice form factor.

There are a few problems with regard to the iStick circuitry (it measures mean not RMS). It is not capable of down regulating power (it is widely inaccurate, especially at lower voltages). As long as you're aware of it and don't need a battery that can output voltages between 3v and 4.2 volts, you may like it.

If you are interested in seeing more about what is really going on with the iStick see a great post by fellow ECF member Peraspera: Wattage Ranges for Specific Ohm Builds Using iStick Specs

Yay Susan! Mean vs. RMS was what I meant, but couldn't remember.

That may be the answer for you. I bought stock 2.2 for the protank and it was still hotter than I like... so I just don't use it on the istick. genitank and aerotank with dual coils @ 1.8 work well on it.

However! I see you are in Maine, I'm next door in Nova Scotia. That brief bit of cold weather we had a few weeks ago? .... The istick was brilliant outdoors at 10 below freezing. So when/if it gets really cold again we may be happy they run hot eh? Cheers neighbor. Good luck.

I usually run 1.8Ω coils in my evod/protank/davides on my MVP and spinners but have to go up to at least 2.8Ω for my isticks and even at that have to run the istick at its lowest setting. Seems to just be the nature of the istick but for me it is worth building special coils just for it since I love how comfortable it fits my hand.
