Button Top vs. Flat Top

What is the difference between button top and flat top 18650 batteries? Which one is better for use in a mech mod? I'm running a SMPL mech with a CEO rda at .37 ohms. The reason I ask is I have been using flat top LG 18650's with great success but when I reordered some extra batteries I inadvertently bough button tops. Any risk in using them? They are 18650 35A 3.7V LI-MN 2500mAh button top.

On average most button top batteries are 1mm longer than the flat top counterpart, with the SMPL mod this may cause the button to protrude past the outer bottom edge of the mod depending on how close it already is. I own two SMPL mods and strictly only use Flat top batteries in them with absolutely no problems, you simply need to ensure that the positive portion of the atomizer 510 protrudes at least 1mm from the end of the threaded(negative) section.

Do you know specifically which batteries you purchased? the 35A rating is a burst drain specification used by a few different makers now, there are no commercially available cells that exceed 30A CDR so I'm lead to believe the battery you purchased is most likely a re-wrapped LG HE2, which IS available as a button top and will work for your application, provided it doesn't cause an issue with the button as I spoke about above. Keep in mind most of what I said regarding what battery it may be is pure speculation, without pictures or a link I have really no idea what battery it is.

Even if the battery you purchased does turn out to be an LG HE2 it's still a 20A CDR rating which is well above the ~11A your build is using, well within a safe threshold and a good battery.

I'm not sure the exact manufacture but they look like the purple efest batteries. I have a nemesis as well but I like the recessed button on the SMPL. I appreciate the quick response and the advice about the size difference with the button. I have three flat tops that I can keep for the SMPL but I tend to drain more than 3 batteries in a day lol. I have 8 of these coming and it is going to take 2-3 weeks to get them (I suspect a drop ship from China). I will try them out and report back after I get them.

I use both button top and flat top batteries. I prefer to use button top because I believe they are more safe. Most button top batteries have vent holes in the nipple, which would allow hot gases to more easily escape should the battery over-discharge and vent.

Some mods require the use of button top batteries, such as the early model Provari's. The button tops protect against reverse polarity (batteries put in upside down in the mod) which can result in bad things happening.

That's my :2c:
