I could be entirely wrong, I'm still waiting to buy the Newton twenty years later because it evolved into the iPhone and I'm sure there's something even better coming...

According to all the timelines I can find, I see the iPhone being released Jun of 2007, the 3G being released Jun/Jul of 2008, and the 3Gs being released Juneish of 2009. I'm not very good at math (
) but 2009 - 2007 = 2, give or take some margin of error. 
Oh - I see I misspoke above - I started with the 3G when I was thinking of the vanilla iPhone. That one is my fault. If I had a Newton, the handwriting recognition probably would have worked well enough by now to correct me!
Anyway, I see what you're getting at, but my point (not to put too fine a point on it) is that it's a disposable battery rather than a long term investment.
