I received a call from the congressman's office , a reply to my email about ecigs. She said not to worry about them being banned or done away with. She says the vote in the Senate is for tobacco products, not vaporizers

Sadly, this is true of many bills that are passed. Individual Congressional representatives do not have the time or patience to read the actual bills, and depend on briefings from aides.

Crux of the Kennedy bill: Save the children, scare smokers some more with warnings so explicit they can't sue tobacco companies by pleading ignorance of the consequences of smoking, limit First Amendment rights of all tobacco companies to advertise, don't ban tobacco, and crack down on potentially dangerous alternatives.

Most reps won't get beyond "save the children" and will vote "aye".

Now, that is downright scary. Could you possibly email her again and enlighten her a little about what the bill will do to electronic cigarettes? Actually, you probably did. I wonder if she actually read it or had an aide summarize it for her.

It is quite nice that you did receive a response... however, I am with Sandy on this one... if you have the time, maybe pin the staffer down who called you back and ask how they are so sure this bill does not affect the ecig? See what they say. I have found that backing people into corners (in a very nice way of course), actually does more good than harm AND is eye opening for both parties involved. It will also possibly give you a bit more clarification on your members stance, which you are completely entitled to (whether you voted for her or not)

I called (and emailed) 2 senator (offices) for my state today. One never heard of e-cigs (on the phone), the other did.
I would not be surprised to recieve a call back (happened once before to something not related).
But, related to the above post, can I see this bill somewhere? Is there a "bill number" or specific "name", or anything else I can point them to if they ask me.

The bill being discussed is S.972 (Kennedy Bill) They are probably most familiar with the Waxman bill which came from the House... but is laying on the side for now. Currently, the Kennedy bill is not available to the public according to Thomas.gov.

And seminole, there isn't a bill with the ecig in it... so she would have to be very aware of how either the Waxman or the Kennedy bill would affect smokeless tobacco products...

Muldrick, please read the following whole thread. It lists, in various posts, the phone numbers, fax numbers and later in the thread even staff phone numbers, of the members of the Senate HELP committee, who will be considering the Kennedy tobacco bill next Tuesday:

We are all urged to contact all of them, by faxed letter and/or phone, and urge them to either oppose the bill altogether, or at the very least to push for amendments to it that would keep ecigs available. For more specific info on the bill and the kind of amendments we are asking for, see this:
