I posted this question in the mods forum, but after looking at more the posts in that forum, I think it was in the wrong place....so I'm going to re-post it here, and delete the thread from there.

Anyway, I never hear about polyfill being used for wicking material...is there a reason for that?

I have a HUGE, HUGE big bag of polyfill that I use for another hobby, and was wondering if I could use it to rebuild my protank/evod heads.

Also, is there somewhere that has a master list of all possible wick materials? I've searched these forums to no avail.

Poly fill is used to "help" the wicking procedure. You can't put it into direct contact with the coils as it will melt and burn.
If you have ever pulled a poly filled carto apart, you will note that while the coil(s) are inside the poly, they are covered with a material that actually works as the wick, and keep the coils from contacting the poly fill.

Thanks, I was wondering about that

I don't understand what the benefits of using ekowool would be, considered ekowool is silica?

It doesn't burn. You can torch the stuff with a butane torch and it will come away nice, white and fluffy.

They used polyfill in carts, which was the reason there were so many cartridge mods. The stuff sucks as wick

But that is true of any silica wick.

Supermarket, there are different qualities of silica, and supposedly Ekowool is one of the better for use as a wicking material. I don't have any proof of this, but I can say Ekowool feels different compared to to other silica, when running it through your fingers it seems to have a softer and more cloth like texture.

I can say for sure that ekowool is much easier to work with compared to standard silica, at least in my opinion. It's a tightly braided/woven silica instead of simple twisted silica like most wick out there. It holds it shape much better, and seems to wick better as well. Ekowool doesn't seem to break and fray as badly either.

I've got an ekowool wick in one of my drippers that's been used for months, when I make a new coil or want to clean it, I just torch it and it comes out brand new. With other silica I've used, after 2 torchings or so it starts falling apart, and forget trying to wrap a new coil without breaking a bunch of the strands off.

As for Polyfill, that would be a bad idea for wick material, for reasons already mentioned by others. If you want something that would be similar to work with compared to Polyfill, try giving cotton a try. I was skeptical, but as time goes on I like cotton more and more.

Its the relation to how the silica fibre suspend and transport(wick) the ejuice also temperature tolerance. A guy at fasttech made a great post showing the differences in silica wicks just like the different grade gauges of ss mesh silica has a strand gauge.. Ill try t o find it.. Woot found it.

But silica does burn? Since ekowool is silica, wouldnt they both NOT burn? Or is it because ekowool is designed in a certain way?

Silica doesn't burn at any temperature we're capable of delivering to it. It is true that neither would burn. I was only pointing out that because Eko is silica, it doesn't burn any better than the regular stuff.

Eko is manufactured differently. UncleChuck pointed out the chief differences. I'm not rebuilding anymore so I don't use anything. The extent of my coil modifications now is to add to or replace my BCC flavor wicks using cotton.
