I am new to ecig (nearly two weeks now, and 8 days since my last analogue), and I am a bit confused by all the different models.

I have a 510 ecig, an ego-t with a tank and also a micro (which is frankly rubbish). I keep reading about 801's and 901's and mods. I understand a bit about mods - using different voltages and resistance to change the temperature of the coil in the atty which affects the amount of vapour and TH. Most of these mods seem to be 510 compatible. How many different types of ecigs are there and am I missing out by only having 510 compatible kit?

I am a no fuss, no muss vaper and I like my ego-T's just fine with a nice carto. I just got a smoktech dual coil carto in the mail today, and I am lovin it. Prior to that I used Joye 510 cartos on an ego batt.

What specifically are you looking for in your vaping experience? A good solid vape that is relatively easy and not very expensive? Or do you think you will be more into a lot of different juices, and mods, and don't mind putting a lot of money into it?

There are a LOT of different batts, cartos, cartridges, tanks, attys etc. Not to mention tons of juices and tons of vendors to choose from. It can be overwhelming. I would suggest finding a good quality batt, and decide if you want to do cartos or cartridges, and just start simple. Then as you learn more you can add any upgrades or mods, should you find you need to. There is nothing wrong with what you've got right now for starting out, although you will probably find that 510 batt life leaves you wanting, and you will probably like your ego-t much better as you can get a lot more hours out of one charge.

I always keep two ego-t batts on hand, one is usually on charge while I use the other. I have my cartos, and my liquids. That's about it as far as supplies. I am not into filling my cartos with syringes and just use a basic dripping method directly into the threaded side of the carto. In the beginning I found myself buying a lot of stuff that I never liked, because in the beginning it is so trial and error. I started out wtih cartridges (carts) and an atomizer. Found myself almost quitting the e-cig as I got real sick of vaping with a bottle of juice in one hand to constantly top off, and I didn't get a very solid vape out of it either. So I switched to dripping and drip tips. That worked for a little while, but again got sick of having that bottle of juice constantly for dripping and after awhile the flavor of that method didn't do it for me. Tried some Joye prefilled 510 cartomizers (cartos) and fell in love. Been using them for well over a year. I re-use them and fill them back up with joye liquid (many others out there, i've just found I like Joye's flavor). I just recently ordered the SmokTech DC carto and so far really like it. Better hit and holds more juice. I also have an ego vision clearomizer (a carto) on the way (stardust). This one also holds more juice and the nice thing is you can see how much is in there at anytime, hence the clearomizer in the name. I hope I like this one as much as I think I will. I also ordered some Boge cartos, don't think I like them as much as the Joye 510's, so I won't be putting an order in for more of those. The ego and ego-T batts are nice as they fit all 510 threaded carts, attys and cartos.

Hope this helps! Welcome and congrats!

I am new and confused and afraid to miss out as well. I never buy anything generic like when I buy a flat screen tv I want only sony or samsung so I am having a hard time moving up in the PV world because I don't understand what everything is yet and want to make the right purchase. I love the Idea of tanks so I can see how much is in there at all times but hear bad things about them leaking. LOL People explained to me what a mod is and I still don't understand. Some of this stuff makes me feel like I am having a blond moment LOL

    From INFOPAGES up top-Mods
A 'mod' is (usually*) a big-battery special that offers extended run-time, plus other features such as liquid feed, higher voltage or digital readout. We don't advise that a mod is bought for the first purchase unless you are in a fully-mentored situation where someone can give you detailed advice and usage instructions. The performance is almost always better in at least one area, but these specials are not really for beginners.

A small 5 volt boxmod with its Li-ion batteries

    * Some mods are ladies' evening wear specials that mainly feature compact size in stainless steel, and similar.

Mods are usually a fat tube or a box, as shown on the right - called a boxmod.

The main problem with buying a mod first off is that you will have no background to decide which features you prefer. In addition, you will miss out on a useful apprenticeship phase, learning about basic e-cigarettes.

Hi Mickeydrag, Welcome to the ECF.
There is a lot of info to absorb about this hobby - remember it has had 5 years to develop, it might take you awhile to catch up. It might help to read the series written to explain the fundamentals in the ECF library. If you click on Forum, then scroll down to ECF Library and select that, then click on the sticky thread "The Wonderful World of Vaping (part 1 of 6)". This series helped me to understand the various battery and liquid delivery types - I hope it helps you.

The numbers refer to the threading on the devices. 510 and KR808 are very common and easy to find accessories for. With most pv's you can pick up an inexpensive adapter and use pretty much whatever you want. So if you wanted to try a KR808 cartomizer on your ego battery, you could do that.

    Thanks Jammin.

I have done exactly the same and bought loads of different stuff. I quite like a LR clearomiser that I bought - loads of warm vapour, but the plastic gets a little hot and I then get a warmish plastic/rubbery taste which isn't so nice. I also bough a pack of dual coil cartomisers, and I just love the way it drags so easily, but I am not sure I'm filling them right as I either flood them or they run dry after a few drags. I have watched a few youtube vids in how to fill them, and would love to use them more as the vapour feel and taste is great. Did you have this problem when you started using them? How long do yours last beor you have to refill them? Do yiu have to always use one juice per cartomiser for is whole life or can you change without combining th taste of old and new? Can you offer a frustrated newbie some advice?

    Any help much appreciated.

Micky, I have attached a pic of my SmokeTek. I don't know if it is the same one you have...if it is, I fill mine by dripping. I drip about 30 drops at a time. It might hold more, but I always err on the side of less to avoid the gurgle and just top it off more. Using this amount gives me a good amount of vaping before refilling. I just started using these, but I'd say that one should last a couple of weeks at least - depending on how much you vape of course. Perhaps someone who has used them longer will chime in with a more accurate fill amount. My "gauge" for cartos is when performance is becoming very reduced I know it's time for a new one. I usually use only one juice, so I don't really have that issue of using a diff carto or not. Since I don't switch juice often, I just refill a new cart and keep that one for that particular liquid. People who change up juices a lot frequently clean the carto and add a new flavor to the same one. I am not really into cleaning them, I just prefer to toss them when they are no longer working well for me. But now that I am using more expensive cartos than my former Joye 510's I might rethink this at some point. Phil Busardo has a review on here with his carto/juice set up, not sure which vid it was, but basically he had a plastic container that was sectioned off with a bottle of liquid and a matching filled carto, and the box had about 10-12 bottles of juice and accompanied cartos. IT's a good system, and if I start using more flavors (i like menthol but am thinking of venturing out more) I am going to do something similar. That way you have a carto per flavor and no worries about lingering flavors or having to clean one out to switch up. This method obviously creates a need to have more cartos, but I like it as it looks very efficient.

I know it is overwhelming when you first start but it will all come together! And they have so many new items and advances in e-cig technology that quite frankly even a vet like me can get confused!!!!

    Thanks for your reply Jammin.

Mine are XXL's dual coil cartomisers from Cloud9vaping. They look like your metal one in the pic above, but have no branding on them. I will try to fill mine with 30 drops over several sittings so I don't flood it. I really like they way they vape so I think it will be worth persevering with them.

Coincendentally, I was just looking at a website advertising the XXL's (which yes, is very similar in size and appearance to my smoketek in the pic) and it stated it holds 30 drops. I guess I was spot on in my own guesstimation I have been using, and that would explain why I have not been getting the gurgling issue or drying out too fast. LOL

I just flooded mine again then tried a needle and now it gurgles. There must be a knack to this.... Do u carefully drop onto the "wool" or let the drip run down the edge of the cartomiser as u slowly turn it? How long does it take to fill? And sorry just one more question then I will leave you alone (u have been so kind with all your help already). How long can u vape before u have to top it up?

Thank you again so much for your patience and guidance

Micky, this forum is all about guidance and support. Never apologize for asking questions!

Maybe it is a matter of the way you are dripping. How are you filling yours? I slowly drip right into the threaded end. I drip one drop and as soon as it disappears into the hole on threaded end i drip again. It actually goes pretty fast. But if I drip before the liquid disappears into hole on threaded end I do get flooding and gurgling.

I'd say a full carto using this method would last probably one hour of solid vaping. That is vaping the entire time. Much longer if not vaping that long at a time. And even then I just top it off with a few drops, not the entire 30 drips again.

So many choices, and so little time
Don't worry (or get in a hurry) bit by bit it will all come together, and make perfect sense.

510 is the most versatile, and there is little need to deviate from it with as many choices as it offers.

As for filling cartos, the carto really doesn't care how you do it as long as you get the proper amount in there. So be patient, and find what works best for you. With a standard Boge carto, I fill the shorter of the two condoms, then slowly push the carto into the juice. I then let the carto sit in the condom until it completely absorbs all the juice.
If your carto is gurgling, it hasn't completely absorbed all the juice yet.

    Mickey,

I'm relatively new at this as well (only 59 days in). I just filled a carto for the first time yesterday and totally flooded it (I dripped probably 45 drops into the non-threaded end by letting the juice run down the side and slowly turning the carto). But the good thing is that even with me botching it I realized that it still works fine. It's trial and error and don't be scared of trying it.

Also, go to Youtube and search for videos on filling cartomizers. The method that is described above by tj is called the condom method and there are a few videos that shows how to do that. Give it a go and report back.

I wouldn't advise filling it from the non threaded end. Works much better and easier from the threaded end. Just wipe with a cloth when done before putting on your batt.

Filling cartos is easy and I dont know why there are so many vids out there making it complicated. Drip slowly into threaded end about 15 - 30 drips (15 for boge size and 30ish for XXL size), wipe off threads, enjoy.

510s are forever needing a charge. Halfway thru the charge it begins to decline in performance. I would suggest an ego-T or ego-C to get an all day batt that pulls great from start to finish. And the ego has 510 threads so all accessories for a 510 fit an ego. This was the one biggest upgrades that I made that i was happiest about back when I started.
