Can tank o-rings (rubber) dissolve when exposed to juice? Any health risk? Has anyone tested to see if particular juices break down these o-rings?

There have been instances here at ECF, where people have reported that the plastic in their bottles and rubber end caps on tanks were melting. After a long discussion, it was decided that it was probably a chemical reaction between the juice and the rubber/plastic that was causing the melting. There have been no 'official' tests run by government agencies at this point. Your best course of action would be to by glass bottles to hold your juice, and glass tanks (if you use tanks) with either delrin or stainless steel end caps. This is what I've done.

Funny you ask. Guy i work with just showed me rubber floating in his cheap smoketech tank yesterday. We emptied the juice and sure enough, his o-ring was disintegrating.

Personally, I wouldn't use one with rubber. Rubber can impart an off taste to your juice. With that said though, the ones I've looked at tend to be vinyl or silicone and not rubber.

I've had citrus type juices crack tanks,eat o-rings and eat away filler in cartos before and also made plastic ejuice bottles all squishy.

In a different discussion, someone mentioned that red or orange o-rings are food grade. I wonder if these would be any safer than just conventional black rubber o-rings?

I would suggest Nitrile (Buna-N) as a safe/available material, but there could be a better performing alternative.
