couldnt you just solder a new cord from another device onto it? i know people on here freak out about soldering for some reason, but its really not hard.

I think you are missing the point of the original post. Whether one can solder or not isn't it... when you pay $19.95-$26.95 for a device, you would like it to be durable. And if not durable, at least not fragile.

Unless I am missing something these USB Passthroughs are gutless wonders, a cable, a switch and a stripped out battery housing with connector. I doubt there is even any current limiting going on.

I made my own and put hot glue around the end of the battery where the wire comes out. With all the reports of these things failing I strongly suspected that the cord not being secured was probably the problem... If that is the case, it really is incredibly poor engineering and IMO abuse of customer. Takes so close to nothing to secure the cord with hot glue.

The other side of that is that the wires in the average USB cable is pretty thin and was certainly not meant to be waved around like it would get loose in a passthrough.

Trapped within my imagination
Turn one of these Cold heat soldering Irons into an e-cig and you won't need a pass through any more!! .....nearly two days of heavy vaping before needing to change batteries for a freshly charged set.

Hey Pete, could you send directions on how to do that to > PO box Razor's hubby's "honey do" list/Technically challenged Inc....lol

I made my own and also purchased one.. Hardly ever use the one I bought. It's vapor production is dissapointing which may be do to the thin cord.. The one I buid has a nice heafty cord on it.. It's ulgy with a capital "U" but it works.

No, the vapor production on "store bought" usb pass-thrus are not due to the cable. It is due to its circuitry. The circuitry inside has to limit the power to operate the micro-phone switch and the led properly.

Those that have "gutted" theirs and made it manual know that once you have done that, the vapor production is unmatched by any thing out there. The voltage is higher as well as the amperage that is going stright to the atomizer instead of being limited to power the internal stuff.
