I've read it here OVER and OVER, and have never seen anything contradicting it. So I looked it up, and here it is. Straight from the mouth of THE MOST respected Medical community in America, the Mayo Clinic:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/caffeinated-drinks/AN01661

These things become lore, and people just keep passing it on and on. The only thing worse than not giving a newb advice, is giving them BAD advice. I've been avoiding my favorite beverages like the plague for two months, for absolutely NO REASON. Coffee and Cola are fine to hydrate with. Please pass it on.

There are two substances that I simply do not function well without. So please don't talk to me in the morning until I have had my caffine and nicotine!

AMEN to that statement TJ ... I work in the computer field and have had my share of long days and nights, sometimes together and have often joked as long as I have an I.V. push of caffeine in one arm and nicotine in the other, everyone will survive. ;)

I am a huge soda drinker, (coke and diet coke) especially on the weekends with the regular coke (not as much as they are saying in the article, but still love my coca cola), but I also love a good glass of iced tea as well ... normally I don't use sugar when drinking tea but something like tuvia, sweet and low, etc ... I have been trying to drink more tea and water, but good to know liquid is liquid. HA!

Here’s the Problem I have with Coffee and Sodas.

When taken in Isolation, Small amounts of Caffeine should not have an adverse effect on an Average person with regards to Dehydration. But the problem with Coffee is to Maintain Hydration, Large Amounts of Coffee would need to be consumed. And large amounts of Coffee means large amounts of Caffeine.

“… Recent research shows that this is not true and that caffeine has a diuretic effect only if you consume large amounts of it — more than 500 to 600 milligrams (the equivalent of 5 to 7 cups of coffee) a day. …”

Caffeine also has a Physiological effect which can Inhibited the need to Drink Water.

… Still, caffeinated drinks can make you jittery, sleepless or anxious. Water is probably your best bet to stay hydrated. It's calorie-free, caffeine-free, inexpensive and readily available. “

The issue with Sodas is Compounded because Most Soda not only contain Caffeine, they Also contain HFCS and salt. The way the Body converts Unusable HFCS to Useable Fat is Interesting. It also takes Water. And salt, well Salt is Salt. And I don’t think we need a Advanced Degree to know what Salt does to the Body. So when the Average Person drinks Sodas, they are fighting an Uphill Battle to stay Hydrated.

This is all for the Average Person. But Vapers are Not Average People. Because people who use e-Cigarettes are Ingesting PG, VG and or PG and VG. For many, it is a Chronic and Habitual Ingestion. And both PG and VG are Humectants.

People who use e-Cigarettes need a Higher Intake amount of Water to Maintain Normal Hydration.

So is drinking a couple of Cups of Coffee in the Mourning going to Hurt you? It doesn’t matter. No study is going to get me to Not Drink Coffee in the Mourning. And is having a Soda now and again Bad? No, it isn’t.

I think that Coffee and Sodas should not be Relied as a source of Hydration for an e-Cigarette user. Water, Plain Water should be used for Hydration. And Coffee or Sodas should be considered more as Incremental Supplements to Hydration.

Or in the Case of Coffee, an Essential Infusion needed to Face the Day.

While I have never had the issue with coffee or tea, I can say from personal experience that I have had dehydration WHILE drinking soda. I admit at the time I was not a water drinker, so I don't believe anyone can stay hydrated if all they are drinking is pop.

I mean this in the nicest way, but did you even look at the article? Your belief is refuted in the very first words. Here they are, to save the trouble of having to actually click on the link:

Question
Caffeine: Is it dehydrating or not?
I've been seeing ads that say cola and coffee drinks hydrate you as well as water does. Is this true?

The underlying question is....how much coffee or soda?

It is recommended that the average person should drink around 128oz of water per day to maintain a healthy level of hydration. The article says that 5-7 cups (40-56oz) of coffee can start to have a diuretic effect. Then if you switch to soda after your coffee you are just piling on more caffeine, adding to the diuretic effects.

If all you drink through the day is caffeine laden drinks, then I would interpret that article as as saying that it is not as hydrating as drinking water. If you drink caffeine in moderation and also drink non caffeinated drinks then you'll be okay.

It's simple really. Caffeine is a diuretic. As long as your fluid intake matches your fluid output, you are hydrated. If the caffeine causes more diureses than the input, you must drink something to replace the excess your kidneys are putting out.

If you want to run in a circle, drink caffeine. If you want to hydrate, drink water. Just maintain a balance.

If you want to get right down to it, even dehydrated fruits have fluid in them. Am I going to use them to hydrate? NO.

That much Caffeine would make me Coo Coo for Cocoa Puffs
