Every other forum I've been in lets you choose to automatically be notified when anyone posts to a thread that you've posted in; in other words, you can choose (once) to "subscribe" to any such thread, with no further action required. (I see that I'm automatically subscribed to this thread because I started it, but I like to be notified whenever someone posts to a thread that I've posted to, but didn't start).

The instructions here talk about "automatically" choosing to subscribe to a particular thread, but I see nothing "automatic" about having to subscribe to each individual one, well, manually.

Am I missing something?

Thanks.

There are threads that I'd like to know about new posts in, especially threads I've started. It's only right to check into those and stay current. I haven't subscribed to any threads. I just check into the forum category and the threads with the latest posts float to the top.

Maybe a mod will stop in and give us an answer. I'd rather subscribe to a thread or two and be able to unsubscribe as easily when I no longer want to hear from it. There's always the the "What's New" tab in the forum header, which has the "My Posts" selection.

If you look at "Today's Posts" under "What's New", in the list you can click on the black arrow and go to your last post in that thread and begin reading. I like that feature.

I don't know if the feature is fully enabled, but there is a setting in your user control panel for it.

Click "Settings" at the top of the page, then scroll down and in the sidebar on the left click on "General Settings". In there you can find a setting titled "Default Thread Subscription Mode" and just pick the option you want

Thanks, but I did that already, choosing "instant reply by email". Doing that did not have the effect of subscribing me automatically to every thread I post in. All it seems to do is send me an email when a thread that I've manually subscribed to gets a new post. it doesn't automatically subscribe me to every thread I post to, unless it's one i started.

Underneath the dialog box, it says "When you post a new thread, or reply to a topic, you can choose to automatically add that thread to your list of subscribed threads, with the option to receive email notification of new replies to that thread".

That's the part that doesn't make sense. How is it "automatic" if I have to choose to subscribe every time I post in a thread that I haven't started?

Rereading your reply, I just saw the part about "If that feature is fully enabled". Looks to me as if it isn't, unless, as I say again, I'm missing something. Anyone? TIA.

I don't use this feature but...just a thought...after you chose your selection...did you scroll down to the bottom and save changes ?

That's a very sensible question, but yes, I did, and I can verify that by the fact that my selection of "Instant email notification" is still there when I go back to that screen.

Still not seeing what's "automatic" about having to manually subscribe to threads, unless, as has been suggested, the feature isn't enabled to match the text below the dialog box.

I can definitely see it being in the best interest of the forum for a number of reasons, least of which are A) convenience for the users , B) improved participation and communication in threads, and C) more posts/more searchable info.

In conclusion, aaarrg.

have you looked in your subscriptions folder to see if the subscriptions were added?
settings>my subscriptions > subscriptions

Yep, I've checked to see what threads I'm subscribed to. This one, because I started it and was automatically subscribed, and two others that I've subscribed to manually. Again, I'm hoping someone can give me a definitive answer on whether or not the feature I'm looking for is available on this forum. Thanks.

i subscribed to this thread by replying to it and got the email when you replied. I don't quite understand what your issue is(but I deal with tons of threads daily so email notification is pretty useless for me -- it would be overwhelming considering the email load i get already.

Your setting should automatically subscribe you to all threads you reply to if you have set it to instant notification.
