I've wondered since my beginning vaping about fluid build up in the lungs. I mentioned it before and got poo pooed. I am kind of more concerned with VG, it is a humectrant. I did an experiment a month ago, I rubbed pure VG on both of my arms and put some on a section of my hair. It was oily at first then it turned sticky and really gross feeling. It certainly didn't absorb into my skin. I couldn't wait to wash it off my arms. I left it in a section of my hair for a day, my hair stayed really oily and kind of sticky in that spot till I washed it.

What did my experiment mean? I'm not really sure. Are my lungs oily, sticky and gross? There was another poster on here talking about really sticky boogers, I know it's grosse, but sounds like my experience of it on my skin and hair.

Still alot we just don't know I guess.

Monkey Man,

The lungs are a moist environment to begin with. In fact, our body adds water molecules on each breath we exhale, via the lungs. Also, getting "foreign" fluid in the lungs is a fairly common occurrence, and our body can handle that naturally...

More to the point, pneumonia is generally caused by infection or sometimes lung injury... Fluid buildup is the result of pneumonia, not the cause.

This isn't to say vaping is completely safe - independent scientific data is lacking. But, imho common sense dictates it's far better than smoking.

So.... Happy vaping!

This last saturday I started feeling all weak, I'd get the chills and shiver uncontrollably, violently. Then an hour later I'd feel like I was on fire and would sweat profusely. I left work to go to the hospital after a shivering fit made it take 30 min to fill out a simple form. After a battery of tests, x-rays, pokes and prods, a $100 co-pay (I have really good insurance), I'm told I have a left lung full of pneumonia. I'm now into treatment with 500mg daily of Levaquin, and I'm already feeling much better.

I guess I'm writing this to put it out there, having found this thread after searching on it, curious myself. ...and having not much to do after being given the "you don't have to go to work" prescription from the doc.

So to be as unbias as I can, here's all the relevant data I can think of:

  • was a half pack a day smoker for 15 years, switched to vaping a little over a month ago
  • it was storming out, I stayed up way too late watching the lightening, and drank "enough" bicardi-diets on Friday
  • I'm 29, male, live in WI
  • probably most noteworthy that I haven't been to a hospital prior to this for any reason in about 5 years
  • no immunity shots/treatments of any type, including flu, that I can remember
  • I'm 5'6 and 180lbs

I guess it will be less coincidental if I get it again, as I don't intend to quit vaping. Even now having a 1st time completely miserable experience with pneumonia, I'll take it hands down over cancer, right!

Pneumonia is an infection of the lung that can be caused by nearly any class of organism known to cause human infections. These include bacteria, amoebae, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Further, pneumonia can be a result of an overwhelmed immune system when underlying factors remain untreated or are secondary to a primary problem.

If cigarettes do not "cause" pneuminia (may aggravate..not cause) why would the e-cig "cause" pneumonia? I fear something else may have trriggered this infection and I'm glad you are doing better. I had a slight sinus infection I thought time would heal...instead I developed secondary brochial pneumonia...I coughed up a lung before the meds kicked in. Happy vaping! :D

Where I live it is approximately 90% humidity most of the summer like living in the amazon. Have no choice but to breathe it and it DOES feel like you are breathing pure water at times... haven't gotten pnuemonia yet!

Remember the lungs not only hold things they are membraneous thus allowing things to pass through the cell walls. Getting pneumonia from breathing air with a heavy moisture content would seem as likely to give you pneumonia.... Think about all the crap you inhaled from cigs... no pneumonia there either.

Lol was about to post the same thing...

The only concern I had about pneumonia was dirty carts breeding mouth bacteria. This fear is alleviated by changing and cleaning my carts regularly with alcohol.

Now if you are using a cart for weeks and not effectively cleaning it, either boiling of disinfecting, there is no telling WHAT you may be inhaling.

Is there a general consensus on this? I mean, I don't really see how a cart of PG (or VG for that matter), nicotine, and flavoring can be a very hospitable environment for bacteria. Bacteria doesn't just grow anywhere - it need a "food" source. Just because something is warm and moist doesn't make it a breeding ground for bacteria.

I only water rinse carts and one might last me as much as a week before I refill or clean it. I just don't think bacteria is as much of a concern as we think it is. Mold - possibly but not bacteria so much.

Actually, the studies out there that have produced reports say that it is not a breeding ground for bacteria.

Studies conducted on the use of glycols for the entertainment industry (fog juice) say that peak levels (FAR higher concentrations in a SIGNIFICANTLY larger volume) can cause irritation - nowhere does pneumonia come into the picture.

If you get pneumonia, I would have to say e-cigs are not the cause.

I have had pneumonia twice over the years and they admitted me into the hospital and placed a humidifier/vaporizer right next to my bed. I was told cigarette smoking weakens the lining of the lungs making smokers more susceptible to it and making it harder to get rid of colds, bronchitis, etc, once you get it. And then, the only way I could get rid of it, was to make tent with a towel & vaporizer/humidifier. And servere cough, the only way I could stop coughing, is to steam up the bathroom and sit in there for awhile.

When a person stops smoking tobacco, the lungs begin to heal, within hours, and by the third day, the lungs begin to form a new lining. It's only been since July 11th, that I quit smoking, I smoked for 31 years, and haven't smoked since I got my pv and I can already breathe deeper and my lungs are definitely noticeably stronger. I haven't felt this good in years!!

Inactivation of Influenza Virus by Mild Antiseptics -- Dunham and MacNeal 49 (2): 123 -- The Journal of Immunology

Aren't these studies still recognized as valid? I can't find anything disputing the findings....
I even saw it as a suggested preventive for the swine flu, which they are expecting to get really bad here in a month or 2...
here i found the link!!! It mentions vaping outright..
