Can you make a special thread where people can only reply one time?

I have no idea why I would want this but let's suppose you wanted to make some clean threads where you have one chance to "tell your story" and that's it.

I'm not punching the 1st amendment in the face, I'm just saying I think there are certain threads that are built for "one reply only situation"

Sometimes I just want to read like 20 stories in a row instead of 20 stories nestled inside 150-200 replies...

Know what I'm sayin?

It could be like a :2c: thread icon or something where you get 2 cents. Not 4 or 6 or 8, 2. with editing allowed of course.

I am in full agreement with you there. I can't believe how often a few members will completely blow off the topic and start chit-chatting amongst themselves or high-fiving eachother. You think, "Wow this an interesting thread and look, over 200 posts, it's a must-read". Turns out most of those posts are some drivel about their cat or whatever, or how great they look in their avatar.

Meanwhile, you're still searching for some useful information, trying to ignore those tickles of alienation.

Not quite sure how your idea is a workable solution however, but it's a great start.

:) I'll just be ducking behind the desk now.

+1 on this. It's maddening, isn't it ? Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. (Although my avatar cat is the most handsome one ever !)

Hmm....I would think more would have responded to this...

I 100% agree with the OP on most occasions, but some threads (like the Sat Thread, Ms Ts thread and some others) NEED the in between ramblings - but only because they are waiting for their mods to be made, their juices to be created, etc and it keeps people from going into toddler like "I want it now!" rages  I know it did for ME anyhow :)

Ive seen in some "other" forums that people take over others threads purposely bc they dont like the OP or is trying to derail for some other purpose....totally rude if you ask me.

I think there is DEFINITELY a time AND a place for derailment, but common courtesy is deserved by EVERY thread starter....;)

Thats all...just my .02 :D

Don't hop on too quick, this boat is sunk.

Sorry folks, but this is technically not something that can be done with the forum software.
Well I realize that it's not possible with some forum codes but it's a great idea, I was jumping on the "great idea" boat, not the yes lets do it now nownow! boat. lol

Best way to do it is to TRY and post that in the OP.

Then, when things start to spin out of control, GENTLY nudge the subject back up to the fore-front. But, it would HAVE to be done gently, people can turn downright NASTY in a RUSH if they think someone's 'cutting them off'.

But, it DOES happen here and it's hard to control. I know I'm guilty of doing it m'self, but I'll try to steer BACK to the topic BEFORE I end my 'comment'.

On the Social Groups though, you're SOL, they ALL go off topic!!! Nature of the beast and all that..

I think it is possible. Anyone (except a new member), can start a thread almost anywhere on the forum. The OP can set the ground rules in the first post, with the caution, that if it gets out of control, the OP will request that the thread will be closed by a moderator. Threads don't disappear, they just die due to lack of interest. So, theoretically the thread could go on for a long time and it could be "bumped" once a week or so, just to keep it from getting buried.

Pssst...take a look at Jerry's 'upper signature'..see where it says 'Official Instigator'? Well, there you go... :pervy:

Ok domino, if the OP bans me from the thread, right from the beginning, then it should be safe for others to post there !!!! :p:D

He'd have to mention me by name too, I'm afraid...

OMG, we've done it AGAIN Jerry! 8-o

I have seen some of your posts, Domino, especially in the Women's Forum !! You most certainly qualify to be an "Official Instigator". Since you and Angus are such...(clears throat) good friends, maybe you can persuade him to make you one too.:D

Domino, I became an "Official Instigator" after several weeks of lobbying Angus for it. I guess he finally realized that I really wanted the title. The Signature was made for me by smokum (Greg).

I made an "Unofficial Instigator" signature for you if you want it. Just copy and paste it and it's yours.

I don't see any reason why there can't be more than one "Official Instigator", but for now you can be an "Unofficial Instigator".

I think this Forum is pretty good about threads staying on topic and length. I have seen some forums that are the wild west. You can’t even tell what the original topic was from the last post because the topic has changed 3 or 4 times.

What seems to make some threads so long is the “Chat” between member that goes on inside the treads. People have there favorite members and when they see them post, they pop in and make a witty remark about this or that and it leads to a small dialog between members.

Not saying there is anything wrong with this. It is just the way a forum works.

I think the layout here on the ECF is good in that there are areas meant for conversationally posts and going off topic isn’t bad. In fact, sometimes a thread is steered in a new direction that makes it more interesting.

I also like the fact that there is a area to start threads of a controversially nature. You know that there is going to be some heated debates and some feathers are going to get ruffled, but that is why they have their own area.

I have seen areas in some forums which have no reply posting. They never work. And the mods hate it. Someone will post something negative about something and then since members can’t chime in, they deluge admins/mods with PM’s saying the post is wrong or that the mods need to delete it.

I’m all for cleaner posts. But on a public forum, it just doesn’t go that way sometimes. Not a huge problem considering what a good forum the ECF is.
