Can you overcharge a battery the first time?

Well, I finally got my kit and I've heard conflicting info about the proper way to charge the batteries for the first time. I watched a vid that was very helpful. She said to charge the batteries for 12 hours. The info I received with my kit said to charge it for 3 to 4 hours for the first time. Which is it? Can you overcharge a battery? I dont want to screw up my batteries. Anyone got some opinions on this matter...Thanks alot. Terrie

I am lazy so I often leave batts on charger all night.
So far I get a few months service out of my batts.
I store my nuclear winter batts in fridge at 40% charge (3.75 volts) as recommended by battery university to achieve 2 yr shelf life (I hope).
I keep LED end of auto batts elevated so as not to flood the batt.
